I know some students who got accepted to Stanford but went to Berkeley because of the cost. Stanford may be the second hardest college to get into besides Harvard, so everybody gets rejected by Stanford. Also many of Berkeley’s programs actually beat Stanford in rankings. Berkeley has more Nobel Prize laureates than Stanford. So why do people make up these claims?

This claim has been around for a long time. I think part if not most of it has to do with a Stanford-Berkeley rivalry; comments are often more tongue-in-cheek than serious. For example:

www.stanfordrejects.com
www.crappyschool.com

They’re extremely few and far between. Very few schools fare at all well against Stanford.

A better question is why you’re obsessed with what others think of colleges. Miami, Michigan, Berkeley…how many other threads like this do we need to see? They’re obviously all good schools.

Who makes such claims? This sounds like high school lunch table gossip.

BTW…there may be some full-pay students who chose Cal over Stanford because of cost, but for most students, attending S would be cheaper.

(Of course, as the OP suggests, Stanford rejects the vast majority of its applicants, many of whom wind up at schools other than Berkeley).

Because there is a LOT of truth in the claim. The fact is that many high achieving high schoolers apply to a lot of highly selective colleges. And the fact is that many high achieving high schoolers in California apply to Stanford and the top UCs (as well as USC and perhaps Pomona for those that want a LAC experience). Since Stanford is much more selective than Cal, it stands to (logically) reason that Cal will admit many of those that are rejected by Stanford. And fwiw, Cal will also accept many who have been rejected by the Ivies and many other highly selective colleges, such as Williams, Amherst, Caltech, MIT, Vanderbilt, etc…

What do these have to do with undergraduate admissions?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loaded_question

UC Berkeley has the most graduate programs that extend into the top ten, with 48 out of 52 programs that were ranked, as well as the most programs with ranks that extend into the top 5, with 43 out of 52 ranked programs.UC Berkeley has the second highest number of graduate programs with a ranking of #1, with 16 out of 52 reaching top status … while Stanford achieved it in 11 of its 47 ranked programs

I thought you were asking about undergrad, Heidegger?

^^

Well, I guess you might want to repost your question in the graduate forum, and look for statistics that identify the preferences of potential graduate students who are admitted to both Stanford and Cal.

In the meantime, I am afraid that the known facts about how many students accepted to both Stanford and Cal for an undergraduate degree attend Cal hardly confirmed your position. Now, you know that there are about only 10-12 admitted students per annum who pick Cal over Stanford.

Or you might pick a better example for your crusade. ;)

Blue, Nobel Prize winners teach undergrads at Cal. We’ve gone over this numerous times. :)

The report said they have students from 49 states.
An excerpt:

It is a great disappointment to me to lose a state, but I did this year–the great state of
South Dakota. In fact, we even took a young person from the wait list in South
Dakota, and she still turned us down. Weve actually just been there last week and I
can guarantee you that wont happen this year."

Are you reading SD, you have a good chance. Go apply.

stop worrying about names and status! it is all fluff! the best school for you may very well be a small school in Kentucky you never heard of and will never explore or find out about. a lot of people would be a lot happier and get a better education if they did not only think of HYP and maybe standford or columbia!
