Why are "hipsters" elitist?

I don’t understand the whole obscure music sense of entitlement.

What is a hipster?

Why would anyone go out of their way to reject mainstream culture and then reject their own tastes once those became mainstream?

Probably because, either subconsciously or consciously, they take pleasure from being outside of the mainstream. Which is basically a kind of elitism.
