Why are non-funded Master's degrees and their recipients frowned upon even though this is true for the majority of them?

Self funded degree programs are not frown upon. Lack of purpose and/or focus for a Masters Program is.

A lot of people enroll in Masters programs because they think the degree will lead them to bigger and better things – often they won’t. Sinking time and money into a then “useless” degree is reason to brew discontent. That is what leads to criticisms and unpleasant feedbacks.
