why are overacheving HS kids sticking doing every possible EC that they 'like'?

I’ll answer the question in multiple different ways (in first person):

1) College: Ah…college. You see, If I don’t do them I won’t get into ANY 4-year college. All my friends are applying to crap schools AND THEY HAVE 3.9 GPAs…I have to distinguish myself in some other way than academics. You know, cause it doesn’t really matter anymore these days…besides which college DOESN’T like stem-cell research and mock trial?

2) ooh…fun!!!: I mean, who wouldn’t want to to stem-cell research at their neighborhood university? It’s so rewarding…especially when you pass that syringe to the professor…I remember that one time when I nearly broke the beaker with water in it. It was bad…I mean the nearest sink was in the next room, which was LOCKED. That dish could’ve easily dried up easily…that’s 1/2000th of the data that was nearly destroyed. DESTROYED I tell you!!! Anyways, research is fun and rewarding and totally not a waste of time.

3) my friend does (something similar to) it: Before I encountered the joys of mind-numbingly hydrating cells in a stuffy lab room, my friend thoroughly enjoyed helping another professor. He was researching plants, while my friend placed check marks on two yes/no columns. My friend simply awed at himself that HE was doing world-changing research…ya, now about that…

4) I can CHANGE the WORLD!!!: NO-ONE else except me and my buddies are doing research at their neighborhood university, therefore I am a pioneer into non-apathy and world-changiness.

5) Wait…I play the piano…oh ya…wait…mmhmm…ok…

6) It hones my…I MEAN…wait…THEIR skills for college: All that piano playing must increase my IQ…think about…I mean it’s scientifically proven…that has to do with my research…oh and mock trial…wait…what does this have to do with college?

7) give me a break, it’s 2am…i’m going to bed…well I still have some HW to do, but still…oh shut up

/comical authored rant

hahahahahaha!!
while i laugh at you, i do a lot of EC’s… but it’s not to get into college. it’s annoying because there are so many kids that do EC’s to pad their resumes that i’m automatically assumed to be one of them. it blows.

the rant was actually written at 0200 PST (that’s 2am pacific time)

bump

(i didn’t spend all that time writing this so nobody will read this)

ECs= anything you do during the time after school -> bed. So everydone does the same times worth of ECs, it is just the magnitude and impressiveess of the ECs that matter to colleges. Your going to have to spend that time someway, and a chunk will be used for HW, (or not), so you might as well plug the remaining time into the most interesting things you can…

Is it weird that I do stem cell research and something similar to mock trial?

^Yes, it is.
