Market forces.

The US doesn’t tax people to death quite as much.

Back in the early 90s, DH and I were asked to move to London to head up a new branch office of an engineering consulting firm in Texas. We were so tempted! But the pay they were offering was about 2/3 of what we were making, and we knew the cost of living in London would be much higher. We asked for more money, but the company said they couldn’t, because they didn’t want to pay us more than the British engineers made.
