Why are University of Michigan students/fans/boosters so arrogant?

Maybe it’s because I haven’t been on CC as long as some of the other well-informed posters, but the running theme on these forums seem to be the false and excessive hyperbole that posters like Alexandre, rjkofnovi and tenisghs use to bolster the reputation of Michigan over other quality schools like WUSTL, Tulane, Rice, BC, etc.

I’ve always thought of UMich as a fabulous school that offered the complete college experience coupled with top-notch academics like Vandy, Stanford, Rice, USC, UCLA, etc. However, a lot of the Michigan posters on this site are putting me off and I having a harder time convincing my sibling to go to Michigan knowing that she will be interacting with students/alums who seem to have some sort of deep-seated insecurity issue about being rejected from the Ivies/Stanford/Duke/Rice/Northwestern and seem to put down students and alumni from other universities any chance they get.

Do you guys think this arrogance is a Michigan-specific phenomenon or just a CC thing?

There are a lot of proud old Blues on cc, but in defense of Alexandre, I have never seen his posts exhibit “excessive hyperbole” when it comes to UMich.

CC is probably the least accurate representation of Michigan students who currently go to Michigan that I could imagine.

When you’re in college you don’t obsess over other people’s schools because you have your own life. 98% of the students don’t know/follow anything about PA scores or the degree of the Wash U faculty’s commitment to undergraduate teaching or Rice’s study abroad programs. So please do not let that deter you from convincing your cousin!

I’d actually agree that Michigan is a little overrated on CC.

Berkeley representatives are worse, and Columbia representatives the worst.

But, Tyler09 is right.

It’s unwise to pass judgment on thousands of students based on the negative impressions that a few unstable people present you.

Ah oh… Huge flame fest coming soon.

Morphs into Rabid Michigan Fan

^That I will actually disagree with. This board leans highly towards private education, probably because a lot of the parents/students who do a lot of research on things like colleges did the same thing for their kids K-12 education and likely put them in private school. All of the public universities on this board are undervalued.

Since cc is eastcoast-centric, and primarily northeast at that, by definition, all publics are “overrated on cc.”

Yes, people can get a little defensive and nutty, but I think the real contrast is between research U’s and smaller privates. To some the idea of comparing Vanderbuilt or Rice to Michigan (or Illinois, Wisconsin, and Cal for that matter) is silly given the big u’s vast graduate/research enterprise and associated kickazz faculty. But to others undergraduate acceptance rates, test scores, class intimacy and gpa are more important.

I hate the term “overrated.” If so many students praise UMich, maybe it’s because UMich is truly an amazing university. In other words, it’s not overrated, it’s underrated by you guys.

East coast schools are overrated!

People in the Midwest feel overlooked and underappreciated. But every dog has its day.

"Last year, when Katja Favretto started telling friends in Los Angeles that she was considering a job offer from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the young political scientist says she started feeling apprehensive about a potential move to the Midwest.

“People outside of academia would say, ‘Where is Madison?’ ” recalls the 33-year-old Favretto, who earned her doctorate at UCLA, spent her adult life living in Southern California and joined UW-Madison’s political science department as an assistant professor this past fall. “After I told them, they’d say, ‘Wes-consin? Why would you want to go to Wes-consin?’”

Is lesdiablesbleus trying to say something? I have him/her on ignore. I do find the title of this thread amusing considering this person constantly comes on the Michigan boards to trash the school. Talk about arrogant!

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that their football program is the winningest of all time in college football history. :D

Well, on a more serious note, Michigan’s got the best-of-both-worlds great academic and athletic reputation so obviously they’re going to want to brag.

Because they wish that they could be more like MSU.

I have trouble getting past your basic premise.

Michigan students/boosters/fans are not arrogant.

Signed: Northwestern Alum

^There are a couple on here who are arrogant. One even went so far as to say that the University of Michigan’s undergraduate school is superior to those of the Ivies.

Its rigor is certainly superior to that of Ivies.

^This is exactly what I’m talking about.

Michigan posters arrogant? Kinda ironic statement coming from one of the most arrogant posters I’ve ever seen on these boards:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1063467805-post20.html</a>

Just one example.

Pot, meet kettle.

Jaddua: For the record, I don’t attend Michigan, nor am I a fan, nor do I attend an Ivy League university. I do attend a top-15 school though, and am smart enough to know the difference between a system notorious for grade inflation, and a university with common grade DEflation. In general, coming out with a top GPA at an elite public university such as Michigan is more difficult than obtaining one at Ivies.

Michigan is a great school. The Ivy League speaks for itself. Why so serious? We’re blessed to live in a country with such great educational opportunities. Cutthroat superiority complexes are completely unnecessary.
