Have been accepted into Wesleyan - whoop! Why should I choose them over other universities. (I am also an international student)
So many reasons. What has impressed me as a potential parent for the class of 2021 is the range of things they’re good at. From excellence in math/physics to a performing arts Dep’t that produced Lin Manuel Miranda to the sussessful film school (which I think is unique imaging LACs), Wesleyan makes it hard to pigeon hole them into one category. I think it’s important that Wes has realized the importance of $$ in this equation and has made impressive strides in reducing the gap between its endowment and that of its peers.
I was also accepted and have a wide range of interests including but not limited to: CS, physics, animation, digital art, ect.
What are Wesleyan’s highest strengths?
Hard to say without knowing the other schools or something about you. I can give you a big picture (my opinion only of course): If you yearn for a college experience tailgating before football games, big Greek experience, or other similar activities that speak of the Big University, Wes is probably not for you. If you love the idea of going to a school with a tight knit highly intellectual, often quirky student body, where daily conversations sound like they were written by Aaron Sorkin, Wes is right up your alley.
“daily conversations sound like they were written by Aaron Sorkin”
I understand this was intended as a compliment to Wes students, but back when I attended and hopefully now as well, the conversations had far more depth and naturalness than anything from the pen of Mr. Self-Conscious Glib Walk-and-Talk(-at-People) Sorkin. Perhaps the atmosphere has changed, tracking with our culture’s tiresome drift toward metadiscourse, but I remembered being struck by the students’ sense of wonder, openness, and willingness to listen deeply across social and academic and extracurricular settings. Probably an unnecessary comment, but my college days were more of a collaborative script by Jennifer Saunders and Owen Barfield (had he written dialogue).
And my point is proven. It is a place where people know exactly what Sorkin vs. Jennifer Saunders sounds like, and have opinions on that subject. I am not saying that these opinions are not sometimes expressed over beer pong, etc., but there is a strong intellectual, bantering curious atmosphere that pervades.
I don’t know why I wrote Jennifer Saunders AbFab was the thing back then. I mention Barfield because of the poetic depth of his writing. Maybe it was just my group of friends, but the zigzag between absurdist humor and a kind of “seeking” quality–whether it was spiritual, artistic, etc., made my time there unforgettable. And I was a molecular bio and biochem major.
