Why coaches reached out and wanted to talk right now

Coaches reached out and wanted to talk this week, right before the decision date. What does it mean? Do they want to know if their school is our top choice. If yes how to answer the question? We can only have one top choice and don’t want to lie

Yes, some schools reach out since they want to make sure the candidate still wants to go to the school., the so-called yield management. It is extremely unfair for the student to be put in a spot where they have to tell the school where it stands among the choices. You can always say it is one of the top choices and the student is still very interested and would come for a revisit day if offered admission.

Wonderful! Thank you!

If their school is one of the top choices but not the one, will that impact the school to change the decision? The long wait is dragging and don’t want to mess it up when it’s just a few more days…

From a coach’s POV, I think they want to know how much to “push” for you versus any other applicant they’re interested in. So if it’s a school you would love to attend, make that clear. But if it’s your last choice, don’t lie.

Yes we won’t lie for sure. It’s the second choice and the third, not the last. And we don’t know if we could get in the top choice or not. Thank you very much for the feedback!

I would absolutely be comfortable saying is a top choice. Who know what will happen w 1st choice and I’ve also known a number of kids to change their minds among top choices based on revisits.

Oh we could say it’s the top choice? We would not want to hurt any coach’s feeling. It’s a very small world - the schools all play in the same league.

Yes we didn’t even get a chance to visit the campus of the second choice. We really want to get a chance for the revisit day!

I would say it’s a top choice as opposed to the top choice.

AGREE - do not say it is THE top choice if it is A top choice. It is a big decision and schools will understand that your family needs all the information first before making a decision. Schools host welcome back days for that exact reason and should offer an opportunity for your child to interact with the team too. I have seen so many families school lists change around after revisit days. Show interest, enthusiasm and appreciation for the coach on your call.

Thank you all! I really appreciate your inputs!

I would push the envelope as much as possible, while still being truthful.

So something like “It is almost certainly his top choice, but I cannot say that it is definitely his top choice, only because we haven’t visited the campus in person. On paper the school seems to be an amazing fit!”

We had calls from coaches this past week as well. It felt like a final sales call where they were selling features and benefits of attending the school. They also addressed some prior questions/concerns we had. And asked about where their school ranked. We told the coaches they are a top school and revisit day will be an important part of the deciding factor. It was honest without being too detailed in the exact ranking of where the school stands.

Can coaches contact us? i thought they are in silent mode until M10.

i think that the ‘silent mode’ thing applies to only the month after J15

I think it varies by league. ISL is quiet period 2/10-3/10

Agreed.

Important not to waffle on a call just before M10. It’s not just about the coach getting the kid to choose the school - the call likely means the recruit spot is up for grabs and the coach is going to reflect this info to Admissions. Admissions will often ask the coach if XYZ recruit of a certain sport (from the coaches list) will attend if admitted. If coach doesn’t know or has doubts, Admissions may admit another recruit in that sport. If coach affirms to Admissions, and kid doesn’t enroll, coach loses credibility for future admissions cycles. It’s yield management by sport, and is an important process for coaches to maintain competitive teams.
