In response to Columbia University’s prompt “Please tell us what you find most appealing about Columbia and why,” I talked about how I loved that, at Columbia, intellectualism and pre-professionalism are not mutually exclusive. When talking about intellectualism at Columbia, I talked about the Common Core. When talking about pre-professionalism at Columbia, I talked about the University’s location in New York City, and how I could intern at places like the UN, the New-York Historical Society, the NYC municipal government, etc., which would give me experience in my intended career (politics).
I just read an article from some admissions website on how to respond to Columbia’s essay prompts, and it said not to talk about the Core or NYC, as this is not original. But I think that the Core and Columbia’s location are key to Columbia’s identity.
Any thoughts?</p>
<p>My personal opinion is that both are fine because both are unique to Columbia and they are really the reasons why you are passionate about Columbia. Writing from the heart usually result in essays that are better than writing what a student think admissions might want to hear.</p>
