If my why columbia essay was

Why not?

would that look bad? or would it come of as brave, etc…

It would make sense if the question was literally “why Columbia,” but the question is longer, I believe.

It would seem flippant, as well as too nonchalant for serious consideration. If that were the question posed by the Columbia supplement and you could not actually articulate reasons why and instead presented “why not?” as your response, your application would be discarded in favor of a more deserving applicant who showed actual interest in attending Columbia. Why be “brave” or “clever” (and clearly lazy), when what an application needs you to be is smart and genuine (and clearly thoughtful)? Your call.

You get 2 or 3 chances to put your personality into your application.

If I read “why not?” I’d answer, “because the last 15 essays were filled with thoughtful comments – that’s why not” and I’d put your app in the NO pile.
