why columbia

why won’t columbia just be like every other school and allow us to write a full page instead of 7 lines?

NYC luv
(one hand in the air for the big city
street lights, big dreams all looking pretty
no place else in teh world can compare
put your lighter in teh air and say yeah)

Because they can.

Because they don’t have time to read 20,000 pages about how great NYC is. -.- Be unique and talk about something other than the city.

I think a lot of the responses would be pretty generic though - most people would write about the big city, amazing academics at the university, etc.

It is precisely because they want a pithy and unique response that they limit the response to 600 characters. Columbia have spent some time developing their own application materials, and must have knew that a “Why Columbia?” response would descend into regurgitation of trite reasons for the most part, if applicants were given a page.

Putting down wanting to study in NYC as a reason is certainly valid, but a bit shallow - I mean, why not go to NYU if NYC is the only major reason?

^cuz NYU is garbage, doesn’t even have its own campus. What kind of university is that? (though its academics is all right)

Anyways, good luck on your D-DAy guys.

Let’s not rag on NYU too much. If we’re Columbia froshes next year, we could be befriending/dating those downtown hipsters!

Good luck to you on D-Day :)

shuaix3, you got everything correct except that NYU has good academics

globalroutes, the fact that you are not condescending toward NYU students and deem them your equals does not bode well for your Columbia decision

I certainly did not mean to imply NYU as a particularly good school; I used it merely to illustrate the shallowness of basing a ‘Why Columbia’ response on NYC. Judging by the fact we seem to agree NYU’s academics and campus don’t merit even comparison to Columbia’s, that should be evidence enough that there are better reasons to put down for ‘Why Columbia’…

My college advisor/teacher and guidance counselor told me to find a member of faculty at Columbia because it’s so specifially Columbia, so I used James Shapiro since I had read his book; did anyone else do something similar?

NYU is a phenomenal school, they have great academics, a fantastic location, world class students, awesome research, professors that put nearly any school to shame, and job, internship and grad school placement to rival the best.

Speaking of which: what do an NYU and a Columbia student have in common?

…they both got into NYU.

@kjprice, yeah i talked about simon schama (i made it sound like i had a crush on him haha). i also talked about crickets. yeahhh…

Columbia is the bomb!! Thats all I can say!

I can understand some school rivalry, but let’s be fair. NYU is a great school too.

NYU is decent. But for OOS not worth it at all IMO.

Cause they want the real concise reason, not a page full of nonsense.
