Why declare a major as a freshman?

Chico State told me that students don’t even begin classes in their major until junior year, before that they take all their GEs. Is there an advantage to declaring a major early?

At some schools being a declared major can help you get into crowded classes. Naturally many, perhaps most, students change their majors.

Freakylocz, did you just go to orientation? I’m goin to Chico as a freshman this fall and went last Wednesday.

at many larger colleges, state colleges in particular, it is difficult if not impossible to get into some majors if you don’t apply your frosh year. Engineering or Theatre Arts at UC schools, for example.
