Why do a lot of people get stressed out over the SAT; are SAT-prep course necessary?

I had a long talk with my peers in English class a few days back. The premise was this: Are SATs beneficial for students or are do they prove disastrous to a student's health (e.g. their stress levels, social interaction/lives, etc.)? I am not too worried about the SATs for a believe myself to be a highly motivated person, one whom can manage time efficiently and self-study. Moreover, whenever I come across a word I don't understand, I look it up and then use it in speech or in my writings. I just want to hear your guys' input. Much thanks.

Taking a prep course for the SAT always struck me as overkill because it’s not that hard of a test in the grand scheme of things. I can see how they might be useful for people who are scoring really low and still want some chance at merit aid somewhere, but most people on this website can score pretty high even without any prep, so a prep book should be enough.

The SAT is probably flawed in a lot of ways, but I’m glad it exists because it’s one of the only opportunities I’ve had to differentiate myself from the other A students at my school. If the SAT didn’t exist, I’d have the same resume as them and I’d be going to a community college like them. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that at all, but it’s not what I wanted to do, and my high school has so much grade inflation that selective colleges wouldn’t know I’m semi-intelligent if it weren’t for the SAT.)

In the grand scheme of things, I do not see myself taking a prep-class in the foreseeable future. I tend to handle stress well; it’s what motivates me. Thus I am not too worry about the SAT for I like to learn a lot of vocab when I come across it; however, I am concerned about the essay portion because I normally receive B’s on my returned essays. Any tips? Much thanks.
