Why do girls get lower SAT scores on average than boys?

Don’t even. Seriously.

Yeah, no…nothing is that simplistic.

No, it isn’t, but generally it is the case.

I don’t think that saying “boys think more logically, girls think more emotionally in general” is an offensive statement. Rather, I think that people being offended by that shows that our society values logic way too much and emotion way too little. Being able to think emotionally is important too. Without emotional knowledge, you wouldn’t be able to make any human connections.
People have different strengths and weaknesses, and some are more common depending on gender.

^Why would anyone pride themselves on making irrational decisions based on emotion?

Emotion isn’t automatically bad- but when it affects straightforward thinking, it is.

i think the bad part is how people assume you act a certain way because of gender. i mean, i’m a typical girl (no common sense and i’m rather emotional), but not all girls act that way. that just discourages people. why would you want to do that?

I’m not saying there’s no merit to the idea…it’s just phrased badly a lot of the time. The implication behind “guys think logically, girls think emotionally” is sometimes that, as a general rule, guys do not think emotionally and girls do not think logically (which is absurd…we’re pretty much always using both in our waking lives). Aaaand that’s where stereotypes come from.

Sometimes people forget the “on average” part of the deal and just assume a guy is always going to be better at logical thought than a girl and vice versa with emotion/communicating with others.

Also, a lot of people believe logic is superior to emotion, and a lot of people still hold the idea (sometimes without really knowing it) that the minds/thoughts of men are superior to those of women. So I don’t think the “guys are more logical” idea is always based on actual fact.

(As I said before, I don’t think we should use data about averages to make statements about individuals. We can just use it to try and explain trends, like the SAT score one here.)

Thank you for proving my point.

One example = proof. Amazing guy logic at work. :)

Are all CC guys idiots or?

wait, what is this?? i said not every girl acts the same. my best friend, who’s a guy, doesn’t have common sense, and he’s even MORE emotional than i am, if you want one example as proof.

I actually have written a research paper on this very subject. Apparently, how well one does in school depends on his/her gender, whether he/she has a masculine or feminine brain and what gender his/her teachers are. Unbelievably, there are tons of factors that affect students’ grades that the students do not have any control over. If you really want to find out more, you should check out the book Why Gender Matters by Leonard Sax.

As halcyonheather said, one weak example does not equal proof. So I guess you could say you lack common sense? (And using your logic, thank you for proving my point.)

jesus, people. okay, let me reword.

i meant that i have qualities many people associate girls with. i also said not every girl is the same, and it’s not helping anyone to judge others unfairly.

but i did waay better on the math and writing sections than the reading section, so i doubt the sat has anything to do with these “qualities.”

+2

You CC guys are sheer geniuses, let me tell you, for stereotyping and generalizing so much. I mean, jeez, why did I ever think that ANY girl had common sense? Obviously ALL girls don’t, and EVERY guy does and is very street smart too. Excuse me for thinking otherwise, that must be my lack of common sense getting in the way.

…yet you contributed still so much to this conversation despite it being an invalid internet forum, and despite it prevented you from ‘getting out’ more

don’t forget to protect your jimmies from the rustling

LOL what. i’m a girl, so you might have to explain this to me

and i’m sick; where else am i gonna go

When forced to state your gender before taking an exam, women do significantly worse on any math or science sections. It’s all about societal molding and how women think of themselves.

Logic isn’t automatically bad or good either- but when it affects your humanity (i.e. your compassion, etc.), it is. Being too logical can make you heartless, just like being too emotional can make you irrational.
Both are important, and I don’t like the idea of one being superior to the other.
Using a basic example, guys are usually better and maths and sciences, and girls are usually better at the humanities. But the humanities aren’t inferior to the maths and sciences by a long shot.

This is what I think is the problem. Logic is viewed as being always the right thing, and emotion is viewed as being sometimes good, sometimes bad. The truth is, both can be a vice or a virtue, depending on how you use it.

I agree. You can’t use “on average” to label individuals, but you can certainly use it to spot trends.
