Why do parents and consultants discourage applying to Exeter?

I’ve come across many parents and consultants who discourage from applying to Exeter because of the rigorous/competitive culture. They say it’s not a very nurturing…an “every man for themselves” type of environment. Any Exonians or Parents can weigh in on this?

Hey Smash1978!

It’s true that some parents and consultants might discourage applying to Exeter due to its reputation for being highly competitive and rigorous. They might feel it can be a bit overwhelming for students who thrive in more nurturing, collaborative environments. However, it’s important to remember that every student is different. Some thrive in challenging settings and find that Exeter’s environment prepares them exceptionally well for college and beyond. It could be helpful to use a percentage calculator to weigh the pros and cons based on your child’s strengths and preferences. Talking to current students and parents can also give you a clearer picture. Good luck with your decision!

as a prep at exeter rn, this is completely false. sure some people here are like that, but for the most part everyone is grueling thru the academics here together. people smile at you down the path and say hi to you even if you’re strangers, the teachers and other students r always there to help if needed, it’s just a matter of sticking with the right people and knowing when to ask for assistance.
