Every time I saw someone come in drunk off their ass and loud as hell, in my dorm they always got railed on at least a little bit the next day. Hell, when I did it, I heard about it from people for at least a week (yes, I apologized, no it didn’t happen again). For most people it generally didn’t happen more than once or twice, and really, most people are genuinely sorry about it the next day. I know I was. You can’t really help how loud you throw up, because you’re already miserable by that point as it is. I don’t think most people’s objectives when drinking is to get that completely knackered. Nearly all the time, esp. for girls, it’s an accident. People who didn’t understand that everclear is 95% alcohol and two cups of punch containing it is enough to make you F-ed up. I don’t really think they can be faulted for it THE FIRST TIME. Now, obviously, if it’s a habitual thing, then by all means, fault them to hell. But have some leniency the first time. Many people are away from mom and dad sheltering influence for the first time EVER and barely know what to do with themselves.

I posted on this thread before… and am starting college in the next two weeks.

The fact here is that drinking is common on almost every college campus… many people are ready to get drunk all of the time out of high school… the reason is simple. A lot of people I know in high school seem to not be able to truly have fun without a couple of drinks. For the whopping majority of people who choose to drink, it isn’t to ‘break the rules’. The irony is that for many people is that they can follow the ‘rules’ they feel their peers have created. Many feel like an outcast by not drinking.
Many of the young people of today have parents who got drunk in college and turned out just fine. Others have tried it out over and over again… clearly seeing the advantages of drinking but avoiding trouble for drinking underage… the ‘meritocracy’ we live in puts a lot of people under a lot of stress to succeed.
A few decide ‘Screw this… I’m just going to have fun. I know that the real word is a *****.’ These people decide that drinking is an outlet for fun… an escape from the stresses the real world has.
Others seek to achieve some sort of ‘perfect image’… the kid who is the best-looking, smartest, most outgoing, best partier, etc… being a drinker and doing well in school is often part of this ‘image’ they try for. Whether this image is healthy or not… it doesn’t matter. It is often out of a need for other people to like them. It is an image that they subconsciously realized was a popular one… and that’s it.
There are many others who know how to have fun without alcohol and don’t think the ‘drunk overachiever’ image is that attractive that do so simply because one of their close friends (usually one that they knew for years and years…) decides to drink. That person gets his or her friends involved in the scene and that’s it… another recreational activity. These people are often the more ‘moderate’ drinkers… who like to call themselves ‘social drinkers’.
These are reasons why people choose to drink… others choose not to drink for personal reasons or they simply don’t like the idea of being drunk… most of these people believe that their lives are fine without alcohol… that they know how to have a good time without getting buzzed five times a week. Others simply have been brainwashed by family/religion into thinking that all drinkers are evil… that in my opinion, is an incredibly narrow-minded view of the world.
As there are many reasons why people choose to drink alcohol underage… there are many reasons why people choose to not to.
My opinion is that as long as a drunk person doesn’t harm someone else due to his or her actions… then it is alright for that person to drink if he or she wants to. If he or she really doesn’t want to be involved in the drinking scene… but simply gets involved due to peer pressure… then for the love of science… I hope that person has the will and inner strength to get out of it!
