Why do people drink alcohol?

hmm…we should factor in int’l students as well. the drinking age in other countries are well below 21 lol.

hmmm

i drink because its fun

case closed

i drink because its fun and i like to party. people need to stop judging others on their lifestyles. some people are more conservative than others but its none of your business what someone wants to do on their recreational time.

“Also, I highly doubt that people who take high amounts of drugs are successful. They may have success in terms of money, but their life is filled with holes that they feel drugs will fill. Thus they aren’t successful.
Perhaps you feel inadequate when compared to a clean person like me. Perhaps you are trying to justify it being okay that you take drugs. Don’t lie, we can correctly infer that you indeed do.
There are the kids like me who care about their future and then there are the kids whose lives revolve around alcohol.”

my, aren’t we pompous. And question, how do you know people who take drugs are not successful? And like somebody else said, their definition of successs may not be yours, and your definition is only for YOU, nobody else. How do you know their lives are filled by “holes”? You dont know every single person who has taken drugs. Just because maybe you know like 10 people who do drugs and their lives are a mess, you take these examples and try to prove a point, but its really not helping your case at all. I have never taken drugs and never plan to, but I do not think im better than people who do, nor “cleaner” (whatever that means). Nobody is saying its right to take drugs, but we respect other peoples opinions, and don’t look down upon them. I bet you there are many people who take drugs who are more “successful” (in quotes because you apparantly believe that your definition is right, and everybody elses’s is wrong) than you.

And about alcohol, you do realize ALOT of people drink, and probably the majority of the leaders/heros/role models of the country drank even underage? And those people didn’t make alcohol who they were. They drank because they wanted to, and good for them. If they didn’t want to, then good for them too. its their choice, and you really dont have a right to patronize everyone who drinks. And I am not saying I drink, but I think its up to the individual people to decide whats right for them, and you are not better than them because you dont drink or do drugs. I guarantee you there will be plenty of people who drink, who will be happier than you. Its just life.

Im not trying to be mean or anything, but your arguement makes you seem very VERY conceited, and I’m sorry to say, you aren’t better than everyone else.

note I probably have spelling errors, grammar errors, and some sentances that dont make sense, and I really dont care. I’m just saying this because I’ve been on this site for a long time, and it seems like alot of people try to belittle others for stuff like this. Get over it. =)

So people will pet their monkey.

If you don’t drink, that does make you better than everyone else who does.

■■■■■.

:)

whatever.

ahhhhh monkey

btw my answers to this thread:
because some alcohol tastes good
because people like the way it makes them feel
bc it loosens them up

bc they are feeling something different than what they normally feel

and kids who are underage:::
because they want to feel theyve broken the rules and gotten away with it
and all the reasons above as well

Many people on this thread have said that people shouldn’t judge. Why?

Calling people conceited or on a moral high horse does not invalidate their arguments.

The analogies to sweets/junk food and or risky activities (rock climbing/skydiving) are all weak. While daredevil activities are risky they are still do not cause bodily harm every time. Additionally, junk food, while not always necessary, does contain necessary nutrients (sugars, fats, sodium) that are very addictive (as they are necessary) and in excess are unnecessary, but alcohol is always in excess.

And about the buzz from just a bit of alcohol is hardly anything to crow about. On Pesach (passover) i usually have about 2 glasses of wine (supposed to have 4 but i dont like to) and it makes it so that you cannot think as critically or quickly.

“'and kids who are underage:::
because they want to feel theyve broken the rules and gotten away with it
and all the reasons above as well”

Haha, right. Maybe a few losers, at most, drink for that reason.

This thread is so pointless because its just going to be a few straight-edge kids passing off judgement on the rest. You all need to get over it. I can’t believe OP even started this thread. You’re either incredibly unintelligent, or you meant to start a flame war.

Considering that obesity is becoming a worse and worse problem in the United States. Also, heart disease is the number one killer in the United States, which can be linked to an unhealthy diet. The number of deaths due to alcohol consumption pales in comparison to this.

And high fructose corn syrup and saturated and trans fats are definitely NOT neccesary nutrients. You cannot say that drinking one beer will cause more bodily harm than drinking a coke. So the analogies to junk food are not weak.

^^^^read “the omnivore’s dilema”

junk food is scary evil and corporate and nasty.

This thread reminds me why I didn’t like philosophy. I don’t like to sit and cogitate all day. Both sides, your arguments are meaningless outside of this forum. When the thread is dead, no one’s viewpoint will have changed.

But don’t let that stop you. Voice your vitriol.

hahaha, corporate…that made me laugh punkdudeus…
you aren’t too fond of those corporate capitalistic bastards either? corporate america disgusts me…

it really is horrible what trash they serve in vending machines in schools and such. junk food is plenty addictive, because the purpose of it is the same as alcohol–for comfort. plus, fat is known to cause addictions.

all i’m gonna say is if any of you guys have never been drunk before then just go ahead and try it once to see if you like it

i bet you will

dood, that book…scarred the **** outta me, there’s 38 ingredients in a chicken mcnugget, 13 are derived from corn (corn syrup, chickens force-fed with corn, and a bunch of others) the rest are synthesized and made from petroleum products and other chemicals. one chemical is based completely from oil, and is toxic, but the FDA lets them pour it on to keep the batter stuck to the chicken and keep it’s color golden…creepy stuff.

the corporatocracy is the most obstructive, and blood sucking system that causes global poverty and oppression, it’s really quite sad. hopefully more oppressed peoples rise up (like in Bolivia, Venezuela and others) and people in the US wake up soon.

^^ you a hugo chavez fan?
I have to say, after reading about him more (not just the bs that bush says about him) i see him more and more as a humanitarian.
subsidized oil for poor american regions and first nation to give money to america for katrina? not to mention helping out much of latin american financially…

wait wait… hugo is helping out “much of latin americaN financially” and donating money to Katrina… yeah because that makes sense because Venz. is a thrid world nation soley relying on their oil reserves to stay affloat while hugo becomes more and more power hungry every day… although allowing ONE opposition television was a nice gesture… i wish every country was like Ven…
