Why do people freak out about GPAs?

I see threads of people crossing colleges off their lists because “they only accept 3.9 GPAs and above” and “I only have a 3.7678392473289479 GPA”.

Now honestly, why would would that constitute an automatic rejection? They difference between a 3.9 GPA and a 3.77 is literally about half a B (assuming you are calculating based on letter grades). Its maybe 3 points off of a numerical GPA.

Yes, GPA is important–but only until you get over a certain threshold. At that point, it won’t matter if you got a B first semester in English. Everyone is in the same boat. There is no “standard” for certain colleges. An average is an average for a reason: there are many high in the spectrum and many low in the spectrum; not everyone is in the middle.
