Why do people still major in their major when they are practically failing?

I know a couple of people that are Bio-related majors and most of them are pre-med or pre-pharm or some sort of pre-health. Most of them are either 2nd or 3rd years and they have been absolutely struggling in their classes. Some of their didn’t pass their classes while borderline passing a few. Regardless, their GPAs are ridiculously low (less than 3.0 and some hover just above 2.0 and few have been on academic probation).

Yet they are still determined to be Doctors.

You’d think by your 3rd year and you’re still getting C- in your Bio/Chem classes, you’d think that the health field isn’t cut out for you. Why do people continue to persist and graduate with a subpar GPA while risking academic probation? If you’re a 1st year, then it’s a sign you should change, but if you’re a 2nd or 3rd year and you continue to persist, what is the point? No, you are not going to get accepted to Medical School with your 2.01 GPA. I don’t care if you know somebody who knew somebody who knew somebody who did. Just because it happened to them doesn’t mean you will be as lucky.

Probably because the parents are paying for it and won’t pay if the child majors in something they don’t like. I know about 3 people like that, but I have no idea what their GPAs are. They hate their majors though.

I’m pretty sure there are many jobs that would benefit with a degree in of those Science related fields that do not include medical school.

Nutrition Coach
Personal Trainer
Nursing
etc…

In my situation, it’s kinda more like doing what you like (not necessarily well) and not liking most of the other requirements. Plus, I’m not pre-med.

But of course… I’m thinking of a major change.

its tough to give up on your dreams. some people are also so far into the major that switching majors would mean more school and thus more costs, making a switch not feasible. I agree with you though, if I was a good enough friend I would talk to them about being realistic…life’s hard

Not all bio/chem majors are pre-med. They don’t need the high GPAs.

Some people major in fields they enjoy, not because they are easy/hard for them.

A lot are still determined to go to professional school. They probably have to goal of merely getting the degree in their major and then hoping to do some sort of SMP or post-bac.

Either way, I don’t mind and dont know why you even care. These are the people that help level out the curves and make the grading scale easier on us, so let them barely pass in peace.
