why do so many people hate country music?

I have heard so many people say it so many times that they like all kinds of music, except for country music. It seems like all of the conversations with my friends about music include their agreeing on they can listen any music, rock, pop, rap…but country. Country music is almost like a taboo, at least to people around me. And I have met people from all over the country, northeast, midwest, west, even people from Texas told me that they cannot handle country music. I was never a fan of country music. But I still like some of John Denver’s songs. Country is definitely not on the top of my most listened-to genres list, not even close. But I still don’t understand why so many people, especially people in high schools and colleges, resent country music so much. This resentment is almost like a fasion.

People can’t identify with country music. It’s not associated with anything cool, hip, or modern…except for pop-country (like Carrie Underwood or Kenny Chesney or something…some amount of mainstream popularity), which any true country fan would tell you is a disgrace to country!

According to the Economist, country music is the most listened to genre of music in America. John Denver isn’t country music either (that’s not to say I don’t love his music though).

I love country music…and other genres too. A lot of the new country music is annoying and has too much of a pop vibe to it. Garth Brooks, George Strait, Joe Diffie, Clay Walker, Collin Raye, etc are the country singers I love to hear. And the people who came before them. But a lot of this new crap bugs me. And I’m VERY picky about female singers…I don’t really like any, just a couple songs here and there.

The only country song I like is Sherryl Crowe’s First Cut is the Deepest. I was rather upset that we were thinking of bringing the Rascal Flatts to our school, but we aren’t now  I would much rather have someone like Kanye West…

because it is a bunch of redneck hicks who can’t hold a tune talking about how their dog died and their wife left them.

Seriously though… in my personal opinion the only good music comes from Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, Frank Sinatra and pretty much anything made before 1900. Although the one country song I do like is Country Roads, but that may just be because I really like WV.

My music appreciation teacher hates it because it’s so simplistic compared to genres like rock and jazz. It’s so simple he can’t stand to listen to it.

I think a lot of people just are really closed-minded towards it and don’t give it a chance. I used to be one of them. But when I got to OK, one of my friends gave me some country music, mostly cross-over types, but also a little of other stuff, and I found I really like it, especially Carrie Underwood and Rascal Flatts. My favorite genre of music is Broadway musicals, followed by (instrumental) movie soundtracks, and then cross-over country. I think it’s one of the only genres left besides Broadway, classical, and random people like Josh Groban and Kelly Clarkson, that has artists that actually can sing and have talent.

I never liked it in high school. but now that Im in college, Ive found that its one of only 2 genres you can dance to with girls, the other being rap. And seeing as how I cant dance to rap, country has grown on me. Plus Im at texas A&M and its kinda part of the culture

Smooth jazz is worse than country.

At least there is something worse out there. Sweet Home Alabama is some racist ****, though.

Lol, Sweet Home Alabama isn’t even country and is a great song!

Yeah, I argee that it’s music a lot of younger people (who don’t live in the south/on a farm) can’t identify with, so that translates into “uncool”. Country music is a lot more popular with kids in places like Texas, Tenesse, etc. I mean, half the songs are about riding around on your tractor…if there was a rock song about that, wouldn’t you be like…uh…ok…

But I actually love country. I’m a horse person and all the girls at the barn (yeah rich northeastern girls) love country music. You can really get into it. It is more simplistic and there is less diversity in it than jazz, rock. But it’s fun to listen to if you give it a chance. We go out ot country concerts a lot :).

Amarillo Sky is one of my favorite songs and sooooo pretty.

I used to hate it until I came to school in Nashville. It’s great here because the country stars are in your backyard!

When I was growing up, my parents only listened to country music and Irish music. I grew to loathe both genres. But as I get older, I’m trying to be more open-minded about music. I think some country performers are amazing songwriters: Willy Nelson, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett come to mind.

I don’t like most modern pop-country because, like most pop music now its bland and shallow. I really enjoy bluegrass and folk music though.

I live in the 4th largest metropolitan area in the world and I love country music.

Actually, I’m experiencing the opposite. I loved country music before it became hip and everyone jumped on the bandwagon.

I work at a doctor’s office and we play country all the time. If it’s not country it’s oldies.

Personally, I have nothing against country. Some of the songs are sort of catchy and while I definitely wouldn’t call myself a country music fan I don’t mind when they play it.

I know of a lot of people who like country and an equal amount of people who don’t. I think the reason you have so many people like this is because it’s not really mainstream. Being a big trance fan I know the deal. Country and trance both have their audiences (the south and Europe, respectively).

What I can’t stand is hip-hop, rap, etc. 99% of it is garbage, mostly just littered with references to bling, drugs, four letter words, etc.

because Country music is associated with a part of the American culture that is phasing out. our culture is changing and the whole cowboy, redneck thing is something that not many people can relate to. that’s why the only people who like it are people who grew up in that environment and can relate. usually older men and women who grew up or lived in the south. but of course there are ppl who like it just because they like it.

I just don’t like that much of it. There are a few artists that put out some good songs, but as a whole, country just annoys me for some reason. It could have something to do with growing up listening to classic rock :)
