why do so many people hate country music?

cheers rascal flatts!

That’s why I love it so much.

A lot of modern artists of all genres aren’t writing their own songs. I think if an artist is also a songwriter that’s fantastic, total package, and I have a lot of respect for them, but there’s also just something to be said for having a really great voice and performing a song really well. Otherwise songwriters would be out of business. I think with a lot of young artists (which is what modern country is today) the songwriting attemps will come in time.

“I’m tired of hearin’ ’bout cheatin’ hearts, drinkin’ beer, and drivin’ trucks / I’m goin’ back to Beethoven ’cause Country Music Sucks.”

Some folks just haven’t suffered enough to appreciate it.

Country music’s a fun genre…it’s easy on the ears, and usually easy to find on the radio. It doesn’t make me want to listen to the same songs over and over again, but it’s often what I listen to when I’m searching for a good station.

But yeah, lots of people down in Florida seems to hate it for some reason.

I don’t know, I don’t get it either. Personally, growing up in Texas made me love country music. But I’ll listen to anything.

i think that some pple don’t like it because it’s not glitzly or glamorous (the lyrics) and our society seems to be more materialistic so teens tend to listen to what is “in”…hip hop, rock, pop, r&b

i moved to nashville a couple of years ago, and it’s definitely changed my mind about a lot of country stuff. there’s so much quality musicianship in the country music industry, and not just in the singers, but the studio musicians are all fantastic, the songwriters would be solo artists in a fair world, etc etc. I used to be a pretty big country fan, but now I’ve gotten intensely picky about what I listen to now that I live here. don’t like kenny chesney, all that new stuff, it kind of gives me a headache, but I do like some of keith urban’s slightly older stuff, and I love alt-country. so i guess it’s all about what you’re in to, but if you know where to look, you can find some really quality music

It originated from the South, and having all sorts of connections to it makes people hate country music.

The problem is country is a very ambiguous term. It can cover anything from folk to experimental rock bands like Cake and Wilco, which technically are “country”. The reality is, that most people don’t like pop country like what CMT pushes. Most of us do listen to some derivative of it, either in folk music, old school country and such.

Throw in the negative connotations that “rednecks” have with intellectuals and therein is the main issue. Personally, while most rednecks are not people to have a deep conversation with, they’re nice, principled and a lot more down to earth than the people who live in cities, and the people that dumb themselves the “smartest”.

As for rap, good rap is like slam poetry. It sounds good just to hear, and as you reflect on what’s said it’s also just great lyrics.

Case in point, rap duo Blue Scholars, “Bruise Brothers” (only an excerpt)

"blue is for the ocean we cross to foreign lands
where we work with our hands, and home is where we stand
where the poetry swims, in the lunacy of moonshine light
reflected right upon the surface of skin
verses burst out the pen, like it hurt not to be written
you immature amateur writers is copy kittens
in the coffeeshop kids are spitting individualistic
petty bourgie pseudo revolutionary ??*****??
??or miss this?? resistance is more than just a fist in a wristband
and incense, that wont make you free, * a bachelors degree
I

I have always hated country music, and being a great lover of Karioke, it sucks that so many people sing country songs. I also hate rap, as anything after 1996 that isn’t by Eminem or Ludacris is pretty bad. One last question/observation about country: why do so many females have Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” as their profile song? I guess their boyfriends cheat on them!

i’m more of a classic rock fan, but i guess country is not that bad. Do the dixie chicks classify as country?

Dixie chicks qualify. I’m more about bluegrass and classic country. Some new mainstream country isn’t that bad, but in general I don’t like it.
