“Are Most Uchicago Students Gay?”)

No real answer … but Chicago is not the only target for this sort of behavior. Of the boards that I am familiar with, Harvard and MIT also seem to get a lot of nasty posts.

I just found it weird that they didn’t have an engineering department. Whatever.

Engineering’s too practical. They have a huge emphasis on the theoretical.

Orangetwee - I don’t see how that question conveys any sense of disdain towards Chicago.

hear hear from the MIT board.

I’ve seen it a lot with Harvard and Chicago more than other schools. (I don’t hang out on the MIT board, so this is what I’ve seen in the parents’ forums, mostly.)

Brand -
“I don’t see how that question conveys any sense of disdain towards Chicago.”

It shouldn’t … and hopefully 20 years from now, no one will get it at all. However, my impression is that it was meant to be both disdainful and hurtful.

pebbles -
yeah, its been really awful on the MIT forum - a tough time to get through - but the vultures will leave at some point.

“Engineering’s too practical. They have a huge emphasis on the theoretical.”

you’re right, there’s no practicality to economics or pre-med or math/stat or anything like that, it’s all theory basically

no, we don’t have an engineering dept. because the school is dorky enough as it is

i think it’s more of “giving people anonymity allows them to act obnoxiously” issue, like with road rage.

it seems like every school gets a little bit of something, deserved or not. I think that to some people, Chicago is high-flight and elitist without good reason (I can think of specific serial posters who will stop at nothing to insult Chicago).

I’m really not that concerned about the unwarranted criticism, though-- every time I heard somebody say, “CHICAGO! THAT’S WHERE FUN COMES TO DIE!” I just wanted to go even more.

Yes! I thought that I was the only one that found the “where fun comes to die” stereotype extremely appealing, but you proved me wrong, amykins.

^^^You guys are wonderful!

I believe that there is a good possibility that they will offer engineering in the future. President Zimmer mentioned this in a speech last month.

OP-

I know what you mean. My neighbor apparently told my mom that she “wouldn’t send her dog to that school.”

I just ignore it. We all know this school is an excellent place to go and can take a person many places.

A dog wouldn’t be able to hack it here anyway and it would just end up at Brown.

Bob Zimmer has mentioned the possibility of engineering on several occasions. He has stated that there is interest in types of engineering that are closely related to basic science, such as molecular engineering. He has ruled out electrical or civil engineering.

Some of the most brilliant people at my high school are going to Brown…

Brown is a good school, it’s just not really a school. shrugs

Well jack, Brown happens to be one of the best schools in the country and it does not have the name recognition problem that Chicago has. Just chill…

Brown is a truly excellent school, and is making some pretty gutsy changes regarding lessening the tip factor of legacies.

In our part of the country, Brown and Chicago have (outside of some academic and professional circles) similar name recognition problems. In general, people are aware of our local uni’s and state schools, the bigtime football and basketball schools, and Harvard and Yale (because of the Bushes; this may or may not be positive).
