Why do socks hurt?

4treeskid who is now in Boston called to ask why socks hurt. He hasn’t worn socks for six or seven years until yesterday. I told him if he thinks socks are bad, wait until you put on the boots!

I love socks! Maybe he should cough up the $5 for some nice athletic socks instead of the $1.50 for a five-pack of Wallgreens brand socks. My Puma socks are extremely soft, and I’ve had nice breathable socks from Nike and Adidas before. If the seams are bothering him, tell him to put them inside out.

Undisciplined socks can be a bane. Properly trained, they can be man’s (or woman’s) best friend. If you treat them right, give a gentle washing, fold them, (do not roll), don’t play favorites, they will be loyal and helpful companions.

Now I’ve heard of socks disappearing, but there have been few documented occurences of violence caused by socks against humanity.

Mine have on occaision snagged a toenail, but I think that’s rather atypical.

Uh oh, I definitely play favorites with my socks… And I never fold them…

A baseball coach that my kids had many years ago (was an ex-pro player) said that the trick for making socks comfortable is to wear them inside out. My kids have worn them like that ever since.

I always feel like socks are uncomfortable around my ankles. I almost never wear them. The low-cut sport socks don’t help because they slip down under my heels.

I have never met a single person who thought socks were comfortable.

How bizarre.

I don’t wear sock so much- except with boots- I like merino wool socks
My D didn’t wear socks ( or underwear) for years- however- we have tactile sensitivity-
for little kids- Hanna Anderson socks are very comfortable
We give socks every year for the holidays- ski socks and snowboarding socks
I like Foxriver, SmartWool and WrightSocks
important to get them to fit- but if your shoes don’t fit- your socks aren’t going to be comfortable.

How can you not like socks? I mean, all socks?

I like SmartWool, but it I’m just working out, I like Thorlo, with the thick bottoms.

I have had seam problems all of my life. D did as well. We’re cured now and are big fans of smartwool and of wearing any bothersome sock inside out. No-show socks are a nightmare, but low-cut ones can be great…inside out!

My H has awful socks problems. He loved Wilson socks that were 100% cotton, thick on the bottom, and black. Can’t find them anymore, anywhere. They are now made thinner and with spandex and polyester. He has a drawer full of failures, and only wears about 3 of the last few pairs he could find. He is really desperate. A little too focused on this particular problem…

For seam problems with kids and adults with smallish feet, search tootsie’s stride rite online and you can order socks that don’t drive kids nuts.

You can also hand knit your socks. There are no seams at all and you get to pick the fiber, pattern, color, and size.

You also have to make sure your shoes FIT with your socks on. If this kiddo bought the shoes without wearing the socks…odds are that the whole package is now too snug. Rule of thumb (ok…maybe it should be rule of toes)…always take the socks you plan to wear with the shoes with you when you go to buy new shoes.

I happen to like socks. I live in New England where my tootsies would be mighty cold without socks. I wear them all the time in the late fall, winter and early spring. I wear polar fleece socks at home with my slippers. If my feet are warm, the rest of me is warm too.

Agree w/thumper on bringing the socks to the store. I also only shop for shoes past 3 pm or after a couple of hours of shopping when feet are slightly swollen.

Okay, seriously, if your socks hurt you are buying socks that are the wrong size or cheap.Socks should NOT hurt. New Balance makes a great sock. Give them a try when they go on sale.

franglish–

We miss the old Wilson black socks, too! And now I can’t even find the thin ones in big & tall sizes :frowning: With 5 feet over size 12 in the house, it gets harder and harder to find anything affordable in 100% in cotton.

I didn’t even realize the difference in socks until a few years ago and my son needed to buy some smartwool socks for a long backpacking trip. I agree with other posters that if socks and shoes are too tight they’re the wrong size.

Let’s hear it for warm, fuzzy socks in cold winter climates! :)

I don’t like cotton socks- I actually find that a blend can be much more comfortable and last longer-
I am often on my feet all day outside in rain and mud & it is much more comfortable if my feet are at least a little dry and warm

Wool toe socks are the best, warm and cozy. [Sock Dreams ~ Terry Loop Wool Walking Socks](http://www.sockdreams.com/_shop/pages/socks_detail_ProductID_1227.php) Cotton socks are a problem…they get damp from shoe leakage or foot sweat and then the feet are clammy and cold. Acrylic can be comfortable with good padding ala Thorlo, but it is not all that warm. Another option is coolmax toe socks [Sock Dreams ~ Coolmax Sport Toesocks](http://www.sockdreams.com/_shop/pages/socks_detail_ProductID_614.php) for base layer, then thick wool, fleece, or acrylic socks for the outer layer. Socks which are too tight do not keep you warm, they just irritate. It is a science, picking the best socks. The research continues.
