Despite how TV, film, fashion magazines, and media stereotype them, Asians are not all:

Kung-fu masters,

Submissive, obedient, exotic sex objects,

Goofy nerds, accented delivery guys, sneaky dragon ladies, and evil gangsters,

Asexual Asian men, or Asian women who exclusively date White/Black men (as depicted in media).

We are normal non-self-hating Asians, who recognize that although Asians have been in America since the 1850’s, the media still grossly fetishizes Asian women and marginalizes Asian men, creating damaging stereotypes and racism for Asian youth in America and around the world.

What’s white America’s problem with Asians? Asians cause almost no crime, are smart(er… oops, did that just slip out?) and are hard working. Based on their population, Asians are smarter, are in more advanced classes, and in more colleges. Why do whites see fit to discriminate so much? Inferiority complex?

I understand that it is not right to discriminate against anyone. However:

Of all the asians I know, almost all of them have mind-boggling GPA’s and test scores. I would almost guarantee that these people would faint at the sight of a B on their report card… ;)

Perhaps you should clarify your masterful dissertation. Asians include almost 2.5 billion people when including the indian subcontinent and indonesia. I’m assuming your perspective enabled you to see the stereotyping of your “type” of asian. In your vigorous defense, maybe you should have included some “other” asians.

I’m Asian and am confused at how you came to the conclusion that Asians are somehow smarter than everyone else. Whites still have the leading amount of patents and scientific innovations in the entire world. In relation to overall literacy and educational levels, your statement, “Based on their population, Asians are smarter” doesn’t really hold true, since a large amount of Asians in Asia still live in impoverished conditions.

However, if you are referring to Asians of Chinese descent in United States, and if you use standardized testing as the sole measure of “smartness,” then Asians on average are smarter.

Please becareful with your assertions, claiming that Asians are smart when they are not in many situations is just poor writing. Also what live- said, you begin by stating stereotypes of Asians but then talk about a related, but different subject about why Whites discriminate against Asians.

A Japanese-American friend has told me that, “I wish people would just leave me alone. I never liked to study. I didn’t get straight A’s. I’m not even that smart. Can’t I just be a regular person? Why does everyone have to treat me like I’m supposed to be a genius?”

ok… ill try to answer the question…from my experience im gonna say its the inferiority complex. no offense to anyone, but for some reason a few select white people believe they have to prove themselves better than minorities(i know from experience)…i just think its ignorance… cause there are bascially 2 types of asians;boaters and bananas…yeaa… not all white discriminate… just like how not all asians are smart…btw jews aren’t asian

Asians from many countries can only immigrate to America if they are top caliber students. The Asians in America from these countries are smarter as a population, but Asians as a whole are probably less smart, or at least less innovative (judging by inventions/scientific theories compared to population) than white(only since race was brought up in the initial post) Americans. Comparing Asian-Americans to Asians is similar to comparing Harvard students to American college students as a whole. When you only observe the top caliber members of a population, it will seem like the whole population is of that caliber.

The media stereotypes aren’t significant. No intelligent person thinks that all Asians are good at karate or kung fu. Most of the Asians I see on TV or in the movies lately play generic roles. An example is the female version of Wolverine from X-men 2, who could have been black or white but was Asian. The villain Asians will always be stereotypes, as will most villains, be they Italian, Russian, Middle Eastern or anything.

Huh?
What about the koreans, the singaporians, the japanese, the indians, etc…?
I dont even think asians are smarter… I think, to some extent, asians work harder, but in no means are they the smartest out of all the races…

The reality is: caucasians tend to have what is referred to as “positive” stereotypes of asians

However I can understand why asians who don’t fit these stereotypes would get annoyed

Group stereoptypes when examined closely actually tend to be half-TRUTHS -meaning (instead of just being pulled out of thin air) they usually have some basis in reality, however of course can never be applied to all members of the group.

This thread is now about Big Trouble in Little China quotes.

Jack Burton: [Pointing to Chinese writing on elevator] What does that say?
Wang Chi: Hell of Boiling Oil.
Jack Burton: You’re kidding.
Wang Chi: Yeah, I am. It says Keep Out.

Eddie: Well sure it was a war. And anybody that showed up was gonna join Lem Lee in the Hell Of Being Cut To Pieces.
Jack Burton: Hell of being what?
Eddie: Chinese have a lot of Hells.
Wang Chi: Jack, listen, I need more of your help. I can’t pay you today, OK?
Jack Burton: Oh ****.
Wang Chi: How can I? I need all my cash for Miao Yin.
Eddie: And it’s gonna cost. She’s got green eyes.
Gracie: Oh no, seriously? Oh, that’s an extra to these people. It’s like leather bucket seats, it’s double the price.

Jack Burton: Okay, I get the picture White Tigers, Lords of Death, guys in funny suits throwing plastic explosives while poison arrows fall from the sky and the pillars of heaven shake, huh? Sure, okay, I see Charlie Chan, Fu Manchu and a hundred howlin’ monkey temples, and that’s just for starters, right? Fine! I’m back! I’m ready, goddammit let me at 'em!

NoFx I am rereading my own post repeatedly and I find no place where I insinuate that Asians of Chinese descent are the smartest out of all races…so I don’t even know how to respond to that lol. That or…i’m just not understanding what you mean.

There is a typo though now that i’ve reread it:

In response to:

The whole point of my post was to try to “guess” what the OP was trying to say in an effort to make him more detailed. I then wrote a statement for the OP, for the purpose of proving that only in very limited and insignificant cases can Asians of Chinese descent be proved smarter, and thus proving the whole comparison of smartness trivial.

Specifically, if one were to use standardized testing as the sole measure of smartness, then the average Asians of Chinese descent are smarter than Whites in America.

However, if you’ve taken statistics, you’ll see the fallacy in comparing smartness based on:
an average between two very different populations in size.
solely standardized testing

The Dept. of Education releases its statistics on national standardized testing scores, and Chinese Americans score higher than Whites. Obviously, this does not mean Chinese Americans are smarter overall, rather it just reflects the averages between two populations. Whites have more individuals that score higher than Chinese Americans, but it has an even larger of low scoring individuals that pull the average down, thus creating a deceiving statistic. The Chinese Americans are few in number, and their data sways in relation to immigration trends. Many Chinese who immigrate America are well off (it helps to be well off when immigrating to a new country), and thus even though they are small in number, they are very capable of achieving academically; because of this, their average standardized testing scores are pulled upwards.
