Why do you suppose that Downton Abbey is So Popular?

There was a really great adaptation of “Death Comes to Pemberley” (a Pride and Prejudice follow on) at Christmas. If you like Downton Abbey you will love it. Shot at the real Pemberley (Chatsworth house).

Back in the day (the '70s), Upstairs, Downstairs was a very popular show in the US, but then there were a lot fewer channels, as this was pre-cable. The updated version - at least the two series we had here - was very poor in comparison. And Carson, nice guy though he is, is no Mr Hudson! ;)

For those who like DA, I highly recommend the original Upstairs, Downstairs, which is a masterpiece of the genre.

Emahee, have you seen Me Selfridge?

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/programs/series/mr-selfridge/

I admit I only watch Downton occasionally, I lost interest after the first couple seasons, when the writing started to slip.
One of my favorite characters is Edith, but the characterizations seem to be stereotypical instead of complex.
The costumes are sure fun though.

My favorite character is actually played by Penelope Wilton. She was the mother of the heir they killed off.
I would watch a show based on her life, no problem.

H and I started watching Downton to see what all the fuss was about. We stayed to find out what would happen next.

My husband and I watch only a few shows regularly. The two main other ones are Chicago Fire and Nashville…CF has more action, but they’re both soap-opera-y also…we have to see what happens next.

Guess I’ll have to track down Upstairs, Downstairs!

I have not seen Mr. Selfridge, but I will now! :)

For myself, I think it’s a chance to imagine a life that is otherwise unimaginable and unattainable for me and mine. I love the setting and costumes. It’s the only way we can experience that era after all.

emeraldkity4, i like Penelope Wilton. Did you ever see her in Wives and Daughters? Pure fun.

I find DA fun to watch, but the soap opera aspect bugs me. Seems too fast paced, or maybe too abrupt. But that may be the appeal for many.

There’s also a lot of really good programs on Youtube.
