Why does Michigan ask about foster care?

One of their questions on the Common App is, “Are you now or have you ever been in foster care?”

I was in foster care (in Pennsylvania) for several years when I was younger, so I said yes. Does this have any significance?

I know UMich has scholarships specifically for those in foster care and it might be for consideration for those.

Either way, just be truthful. It definitely won’t hurt you.

Most universities ask that question.

It can considered a soft boost like being on student council or doing volunteer work if you had a difficult childhood in foster care.

Also there are specific scholarships and grants just for former foster children.

It can’t hurt to state your history unless it is too painful to even think about.

I’ve never seen it anywhere else, at least not on the Common App. Some of them ask if you are in foster care, but that doesn’t apply to me.
