Why does Stanford defer?

Are there different types of deferrals? For some applicants, does Stanford just want to see a continued upkeep of grades, and then admit the student? When it is said that they are compared to the entire applicant pool, does Stanford compare the applicant to regular decision applicants from their school to see if they are “better”? Thank you :)

They definitely have different reasons for deferral. However, there are no established categories, as the reasons vary from applicant to applicant. They might have similar apps, with similar issues, categorized in groups at the office, but that would be for organizational purposes only. So no, there are no different types of deferrals. :)

i believe they create a separate pile for deferees, meaning they do not mix them with the general pool. my basis for that is when you check stanford axess for your application status, you get a reply saying they do not have your application in their database.essentially, getting deferred means when your application was taken for a vote in committee, you did not get the necessary majority vote. i’d honestly say the most common reason for being deferred is trailing a very strong applicant in committee, so yours seemed weak in comparison. also if you’re taking an extremely difficult course load for your senior year, they might want to see how you do first. i believe i got deferred for a mix of both of those reasons.

it is also possible that while your regional admissions officer might have thought you were a strong candidate, the rest of the committee thought you weren’t strong enough.
