Why does the PSAT seem to languish behind ACT/SAT?

why does the ACT and the SAt seem to get so much more publicity when the PSAT score can get some pretty good tuition discounts?

Why isn’t there a separate CC sub forum called PSAT , or PSAT prep? Accordingly, i see lots of professional ACT and sAT prep programs advertised, but I do not see PSAT prep programs so advertised…

I do not even know when my son’s PSAT score is. Frankly I am not sure he even took it. But I see lots of tuition scholarship opps for good PSAT scores.

Because the PSAT mostly only means something to a rather small number of students who go to certain schools.

It is taken fall of Junior year. Scores are given in Dec or Jan by the school.

SAT and ACT is given more importance because nearly all schools use it for admittance.

I do agree that many parents and students are not told ahead of time about the importance of the PSAT. Some kids never even take it because some schools consider it to be an optional test. Some schools only give the Saturday version and make the kids pay for it, so some don’t take it.

Because PSAT is almost the exact same thing as the SAT, except shorter and easier…?

Agree with Post #3 by Ray192. If you want to prep for the PSAT, take and SAT prep course. It is pretty mush the same test, just shorter. You are correct to pay attention to it, though because some colleges like to see that NMSF label.

PSAT is not directly considered in college admissions. It’s only a way for you to determine how well you’ll do on the actual SAT and therefore get an idea of how to prepare for the actual test.

is there, then, a PACT (a pre-ACT) - since the ACT is also used for admission?

Yes, there are two actually. Freshmen take the Explore Test, and sophomores take the PLAN Test.

For what it’s worth, I did not find the PSAT to be easier than the SAT; they really feel like the same test.

I agree with silverturtle. And I find it weird when people prep for the PSAT… go spend the time with friends…

The PSAT isn’t important if you don’t expect to score all that high, but if you have the chance at National Merit honors, it’s far MORE important than the SAT. It used to be you had only one chance at the PSAT as well; now some schools give it every year. In fact I’m worried one of my daughters will blow it off by the time she gets to the real one; she had National Merit-level scores the first time she took it as a freshman, and the next year they actually went down a bit. It’s going to be a bit of a nailbiter when she takes it for real.
