Why does the water here taste so bad?

I’ve tried water from many different buildings. All of them taste horrible (chemistry building is the worst). Why is water in Ann Arbor so bad? Most everywhere in metro-Detroit has really good tasting (tap) water.

Ann Arbor is not a part of the Detroit water system.

The water here is pretty crappy. I don’t have a problem with the water in the dorms at least in terms of taste, it’s really hard water but I don’t particularly taste anything wrong with it, but in the other buildings it does taste pretty awful. If you don’t mind the taste of filtered water you should just get a brita pitcher or something and fill your own bottles with it. I fill my water bottles out of the tap in my dorm and it’s not perfect but it’s a lot better than what comes out of the water fountains for whatever reason, and I don’t like the taste of filtered water. shrug

bschool (new bschool) water is the best on campus.

It’s cuz the pipes are old. Sometimes old water pipes can give water a bad taste. (Think of all the mineral accumumulations in the system and what not) Some dorm buildings have been open for over 50 years now without renovation, like E and S Quad.

http://www.a2gov.org/government/publicservices/water_treatment/Pages/default.aspx

Do the pipes effect the hardness of the water? I’ve given this a fair amount of thought because though I’ve noticed no difference in taste between East Quad’s water and Newberry’s, Newberry’s seems distinctly softer-- though still hard. I thought it had more to do with the source of the water so I didn’t understand why it would vary by building.

I have a two gallon tank in my fridge that I bought at meijer for a couple bucks (and they come in different sizes) that I could easily fill with filtered water from a pitcher if I cared to instead of out of the tap, that is what my roommate and I did last year. I fill all my bottles out of the tank and it usually lasts me about a week before it has to be refilled, if you refilled it as you went with filtered water you’d never run out. If you wanted to avoid unfiltered Ann Arbor water at least for drinking, it would be relatively easy to do. I’m fairly low maintanence as long as it’s not well water but there’s an idea if it’s bothering you.

hard water just tastes bad
