So, yeah… (I have appropriated this one from my millennial kids.
OP–I have no idea what that means. Bevy is not a verb. I think your posts are seriously undermining your argument.
There are plenty of adults who now believe any response should begin with "so … "
My D17 (and now D23) had a teacher in 6th grade who straight up told the class “don’t say ‘um’ when you speak, it makes you sound stupid.”
I remember bursting out laughing in the car when she reported this to me, as it seemed so refreshingly honest. This teacher is widely held by the kids in middle school as the cool teacher, too. Nobody wanted him to think they sounded stupid, and it curbed some of the vocal tics remarkably well.
Like, you know, and uptalk are definitely GenX at least in vintage, as I remember my own mom hassling me about use of them at home in the 80’s.
The more things change…
@garland if you haven’t seen this: http://www.npr.org/2015/09/03/432732859/so-whats-the-big-deal-with-starting-a-sentence-with-so
I will continue to use “so,” when it makes sense and is neither an “um,” nor meant to waiver. Language has a cadence, try to enjoy it.
Lol.
Just a typo. No n Ed to get personal. Meant “convey.” Moreover, I am not making an argument. This is a factual observation.
After you post, move the cursor under the post number, see the gear symbol, click to edit.
The only way this thread can stay interesting is if we stay relaxed about all this.
@lookingforward --I was in no way disagreeing with you. Sort of surprised by your response. In all seriousness, I guess I should have included a smiley face.
@Chrchill --how can I possibly know that that is a typo? that’s the thing about writing–we have much more room to correct it than spoken language. But even so, we all still make errors. And yes, you are making an argument about what you observe and what you think should be done about it.
No, I was just sharing the article, @garland. And I know you know language. I meant some others getting hot under the collar.
I had to look up what’s wrong with “so.” Lol.
@juillet People who affect “uptalk” are making every declarative sentence sound interrogative. This is a distortion of communication; the speaker is degrading their range of communication.
@lookingforward So, I 'm like totally like relaxed about this (?)
You forgot to add “dude” at the end…
“Language has a cadence, try to enjoy it.”
Aah, and here we are on to something.
I’m beginning to think this thread is some sort of parody or something…
^Um, yeah?
Where is our resident linguist? @dfbdfb
Yay, thought of calling him, too, fer sure.
@garland I’m a bit slow on the uptake today
I keep hearing people say, “you know what I mean” in conversations and I think it is quite distracting. I also hear kids say " I know, right". It is interesting how these expressions start and how they spread all across the US.
