Why don't more people pick Canadian schools as their safteties?

Just curious why more people don’t chose canadian top schools as their safeties. Admission is grade based, and since you’ve already done the SAT for your other schools it’s just a plus. Even if you’re going for ranking, the best canadian schools are in the top 30’s of worldwide colleges. In addition, tuition is much, much, much cheaper. Less than $15k/year in some places.

Just curious, that’s all. My safeties are def. Canadian schools

lack of prestige

Canada is cold. :P

Why leave America to go to America Jr.?

I’m not Canadian and have never been there, I have no links with this country but it is offensive to call country “America Jr”.

LOL @ America Jr.

Funny because in many ways it’s true. I’m canadian btw. (most of us don’t take ourselves so seriously that we’d be offended by a harmless joke)

Lack of prestige seems like a pretty decent reason. And let’s face it: a lot of us on here are prestige whores. If you’re planning on staying in Canada it’s fine but international recognition of Canadian universities is relatively low when you consider how well many of them do in international rankings.

McGill is known.

you do realize that we are talking about using Canadian colleges as safeties, don’t you? So where would you rather go, McGill University or State University of Poomington?

Pick and choose.

^ exactly.

Poomington’s really not as bad as people make it out to be :D

I thought of having UBC as my safety (beautiful area, beautiful school, good academics) but ultimately my state’s flagship university was the better school and still a safety.

^ I wouldn’t say beautiful area. Last two weeks we’ve had a snow storm, a wind storm, and power has been knocked out for (at least) over 12 consecutive hours on five seperate occasions

I’m American living in Canada, and all my safety schools are Canadian, and quite frankly I don’t mind staying in Canada for another four years because I will graduate from University debt free.

haha ok then well Vancouver looks really great.

McGill is known in the US. I meant internationally as in the rest of the world. Europe, for example, would qualify as part of the rest of the world. I was actually thinking of U of T which would be the best known internationally of all the Canadian schools, but even so isn’t that well known. anyway…

We didn’t use them as safeties primarily because they have the reputation of having very BIG classes - right up through the senior year too.

My sister graduated from U Toronto. She loved the city, but is ho-hum about the school. Just really big. And the Canadian schools have suffered a lot from very poor funding in recent years.

BTW Montreal (McGill) might be cold (REALLY, REALLY cold) but GREAT skiing close by and it’s a fabulous city.

and for U of T you need something like a low-80’s average to get in

The Canadian schools I briefly considered are just way too big for what I want for an undergrad experience.

Canada’s far, cold, and, well, a different country. Personally, I’m staying in the northeast. Plus, I can easily find safety schoolst with exactly what I want around here. I guess if you live in Montana then it would make sense, though.

Canadian schools are expensive for internationals though right?, why spend all the money on a safety?

Might be a good way to avoid any possible draft though…
