“So, they just stick to As in every class. It is not that difficult. The ones who slip just do not try hard enough”
Right. I’ll just tell my daughter that she’s not trying hard enough if she gets a B in Calc II after studying for the final for 4 days, or if despite going to office hours and study groups and begging for help, she doesn’t get an A on her paper. That will make her feel great.
If everyone got all A’s wouldn’t they be meaningless? Wouldn’t everyone get into med school then?
Some schools only require a minimum of GPAs to keep the merit. I’ve seen req’ts as low as 2.0, 2.3, and 2.5. I imagine the schools with “merit for everyone” are more likely to have EZ terms to keep the merit. These are schools that need warm bodies for all years, not just frosh.
At schools with higher GPA req’ts, you will see some kids lose their merit and have to leave. you’ll also see some kids change to much easier majors.
“not trying hard enough if she gets a B in Calc II after studying for the final for 4 days”
I knew that when mine got 80% on her Chem mid-term after studying a whole week past midnight. She couldn’t study more hours as she did nothing else and reducing sleep would have lowered her cognitive ability. But probably somehow she could concentrate harder.
She didn’t work hard when her professor gave 2 out of 8 for a problem that she only missed sequence. But she did work hard when the professor curved everyone and gave her final A instead of B.
I am joking btw. Just in case someone don’t get it.
There is another thread in the Parents Forum about the excessive amount of stress experienced by many HS students. This comment is the problem defined.
This done all time with items like clothing and such. You create a value expectation with the stated price then discount the price to match the true value or some factor thereof. I think some schools have difficulty justifying their stated prices. Why would a local regional college have the same value as a nationally known university? Others are probably worth more than their stated price. The problem with merely stating the discounted price is that you lower the perceived value of a universities that can have difficulty justifying their purpose to begin with. Like Pennys people just quit shopping there.
