Why don't UC's/CSU's offer Early Admission?

I am going CRAZY over here!!! I’ve decided that I want to go to San Francisco State (I’m in SoCal and SanFran is about an hour and a half flight so I’d be just far away enough from home for me, plus I looooove San Francisco), and I have to wait until OCTOBER to apply (yes I know it’s only like 6 weeks, but it feels like forever). Does anyone know why California colleges don’t offer ED/EA???

Call them up.

who knows. I wish they offered early admissions…I’d be all over UCLA EA (or ED).

Because they’re state schools and ED favors the wealthy.

Just relax, the vast majority of applicants with modest stats are accepted at SF.

I know I know…I’m just one of those people who freaks about pretty much anything, and I just want to get all of my apps in and done with so I can just be done with it.

I was under the impression that there were quite a few CSUs with rolling admissions. Also, some students at were notified in the fall that if they wanted to go to <insert lower=“” level=“” uc=“” here=“”> they were guaranteed admission. One, a National Merit Semifinalist, was guaranteed UC Riverside. Another young lady, and I’m not sure of her stats, was guaranteed UCSB. I was under the impression those were super safeties for them.</insert>

The various flavors of early admissions are basically gimmicks dreamed up by certain selective east coast schools as devices for sewing up some of the high-end students before the even more selective and prestigious schools could come along and snap them all up. UCs apparently just never felt a need to jump on that bandwagon. And now some of the top schools such as Harvard and Princeton are jumping off.

I’ll second post 6–my daughter has gotten notice from UCR that she’s in if she applies by tomorrow. By the way, we don’t think she’s in ELC.

This might sound slow, but what’s ELC??

Everywhere I want to go just says that you have to apply through UC/CSUMentor, and they don’t start accepting until October 1st. But if someone can find me a place to apply for Fall 2008 to SFSU, I’ll love you forever. :)

Sorry, I don’t want to hijack this thread…but why don’t UC’s waitlist?

UCs don’t waitlist because that’s more of a private thing – i.e. if all the spots aren’t filled up, they’ll want to fill them up with waitlisted students. In publics’ case, they already over-admit enough to garner the right number of students, without having to resort to a waitlist.

The UC equivalent of the waitlist, I think, is spring admits – “you weren’t quite good enough for fall admit status, but we’ll let you in anyway – as a spring admit.”

Also, the UC deadline is in November, around the same time as early applicants at other institutions. The UCs have set the deadline this early just to get through the RD applicants – many UCs have twice the number of applicants as the top privates.

And some do have ED. Cal Poly SLO has ED. I dunno about others, though.

^ very true as said above. in fact, i wish some UC schools (UCSD and Cal) would do away with winter/spring admits…seriously as if these schools arent overcrowded already. The other UCs dont have the winter/spring admit thing and they’re doing fine…and are still overcrowded. UCLA is the mother of overcrowded-ness haha

^^ I agree. I think spring admit should be eliminated, and fall admit admissions should be tightened a little.

UCLA doesn’t have spring admits, so that’s not why they are crowded.

Though the UCs don’t have waitlists they do allow appeals. They might be granting more appeals when a lower number than expected chose to attend.
