I didn’t think that it needed to be flowery and creative until I saw a friend’s essay. Would it be better to make it pretty, prosy, and sound nice?

My personal opinion? College essays aren’t read like poems or John Locke. You’re essay will get a quick read through just like most people read a newspaper or magazine article. Focus on real, tangible reasons why you want to go to Emory over other schools. Demonstrate that you’ve researched Emory’s campus beyond what’s available on the admissions website. Show that there is something about Emory that no other school can give you.

If by straight-forward you mean generic, then no. Make it personal. Spend some time on it. The essay doesn’t ask for too much. If you find Emory’s qualities attractive and can elaborate on a reason or two why you want to attend, you’ll have no trouble writing a decent essay. Good luck! And if you have any other questions, continue to ask!
