Why go to a selective school?

Hello!
I was just wondering, why do some smart students who have the opportunity to go to a prestigious or selective school decide against it? I had a genius of a friend last year who got near perfect sat scores but decided to go to a tiny, unheard of college in the middle of nowhere. Is it because selective private schools are too expensive?

Why do you guys want to go to a selective school?

Not everyone like big schools. One should really choose a school that fit him/her most instead of just a prestigious college. In addition, one may get a much much better merit aid by going to a less competitive school with excellent credential.

^That doesn’t answer the question. Amherst has admits only 13% of applicants, and each class has fewer than ~2400 students. There are plenty of “tiny” selective schools. Also, most top top schools now offer incredible financial aid. These days you can be middle class and still pay near to nothing to attend, for example, Harvard.

OP, perhaps you should ask your friend. She probably knows her own intentions better than anyone else will :)
