I’ve noticed Brown has had the greatest increase in application out the ivy league for the past two years. What are the reasons behind the increase in popularity of applying to Brown?

Basically, we’re awesome.

But also, we’ve increased financial aid, to the point where we’re pretty much matching other schools, plus we’re trying to attract groups of students we typically haven’t, and Brown is unique, and people are attracted to that.

And maybe some media exposure helps, too.

As much as I hate to admit it, it’s two words:

Emma Watson.

Maybe because it’s a little easier to get into than others?

^We’ve gained 10k in the LAST two years. Meaning before and after she applied. My year was a rather large drop form the previous year, and nearly every top school got more applicants with the financial crisis. While she may have had a bit to do with recognition, only a small percentage of the jump can be attributed to her. And pretty much only as a media magnet for Brown.

Switching over to the common app has helped as well.

Engineeringjw: Not quite sure where you’ve found support for you claim…but I’d argue that you are incorrect in your reasoning for Brown’s popularity increase…especially given that there are several other ivies into which one would have an easier time being accepted.

That’s true.

I think the Common App was a pretty big factor and Emma Watson may have helped JUST a bit :P

BAMF
thats whhy

emma watson… :(

Or Serena van der Woodsen from Gossip Girl getting accepted?

**Common app
*increase of financial aide, along with lots of press on this topic
*greater presence in college admission “talks and presentations” throughout the country
*outreach to internationals and minorities
*the message of “we want a more diverse campus” appeals to greater number of kids who might not have considered Brown
**celebrity allure (they’ve always accepted some celebrity to keep up the allure)

Haha I was thinking Emma Watson too.

Common app was a huge boost as well.
