Why I Chose Berkeley Over Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Cornell, Vanderbilt, CMC, and UCLA

fit.

How about academics? Berkeley is about as good as it gets.

They’re all great academically. Besides finances, it should just go down to fit.

@rjkofnovi That depends on what you want to study and your preferred learning style. Some kids love being in gigantic lectures (and I mean gigantic…the cap for one of the CS courses I was looking at was 1100 kids) and some cannot stand it. For the person that prefers/thrives in close-knit discussions, Berkeley is not “as good as it gets”. It really is all about fit.

We’re happy that you’re happy. Is there some other reason for posting this?

Well, mainly because I nearly made the wrong decision due to reading some parts of these forums. I want to ensure that future CC users to understand that they should pick entirely based on fit and finances, and that the public <<<<<< private vibe is only true for some applicants.

peace.

@N’s Mom why are you being mean?
@berkvard grats dude!

Congrats, and fyi a lot of people in your situation made the exact same decision.

Thanks haha, and I’m glad others have!

Isn’t that what CC always advocates, fit.

Fit is important, but so is “cut-throughness.” Good luck at Berkeley man, you’ll need it if you have plans for grad school. But, one great thing about the UC’s is that they are really lax on their foreign language requirements.

But what makes Berkeley a “fit” and the others not?

For the record, I would make exactly the same choice. Congrats!

What are you interested in studying?

Well, you read the forum, collected a nice stable of great choices and did very well as an OOS student at a school that targets AND enrolls mostly local students, including many JUCO transfers. You picked a school that offers you a great fit and appears to offer a financial fit, which is pretty rare for an OOS at Berkeley as most consider the extra cost to OOS not reasonable in light of overcrowding, impacted major, poor residential choices, and the fact that the school is in Berkeley.

As always individual decisions are just that: they apply to some but not everyone. You’re happy and that is all that counts. Enjoy your choice!

nerdyparent, I’m not being mean. I am pleased that this person found what he or she wants. There is no sarcasm in that. But I also fail to see what this post contributes. Can you imagine a forum full of posts where everyone lists where they got in and what they chose because of ‘fit?’ Not helpful or interesting.

I guess in this world, there are always people who, given the same price, will choose Camry over BMW because of ‘fit’.

my goal in life is entrepreneurship, and berkeley is regarded as very good for startup relations.

And the irony, @hzhao2004, I own a BMW.

This post is to ensure that people go with their gut. Everyone I’ve talked to in the tech world and the entrepreneurial world around the US has recommended Berkeley, granted, for grad school/class size it may not be ideal.

College isn’t about choosing between a BMW or a Camry. It’s about success, and where you find it best.

If Berkeley is a Camry, then Hopkins is an Accord and Cornell is a high-end Hyundai. All of my friends going to Cal got into 3-4 of the other schools OP listed, and if I was in his position, I would have easily made the same decision.

Haha right, but my point stands. for some people, cornell can be a Lamborghini, I just thought Berkeley was best for me. what college would you guys have chosen?

Since it appears you chose your username almost a year ago, you apparently had an early affinity for Berkeley and Harvard. Since Harvard is not listed as one of your options, your choice of Berkeley may have been a foregone conclusion.
