sanjenferrer,

the conclusions you are making are very similar to the ones made by society that cause minorities to feel that when they are performing, they are representing their race as a whole. It’s like when a black student does something and someone will, in their minds, vilify the entire african american race as a result, whereas if a white guy had done it, you would have held him individually responsible, and not in a million years considering blaming his entire race.

as a “minority” in sexual orientation, you should empathize with the fallacy of judging an entire group by one individual. If you had been with some non-greek, misogynistic, homophobic students, you certainly wouldn’t have drawn the conclusion that all college students are that way. just bc you had a bad experience at one place, to allude to the fact that you judge all fraternities to be “heteronormative” etc. is damaging to the community of Northwestern at a whole.

I definitely encourage discussion to help bring these things out in the open and hear people’s feelings, but as a student at Northwestern you should try to keep an open mind, and not let one fraternal experience cause you to negatively stigmatize everyone who has decided to be greek, because, even within the same fraternity there is soo much differing of personality and opinion. In my fraternity we have ‘crazy’ conservatives as well as members that damn near embrace socialism, so especially to judge all HOUSES on campus as the same by just a few experiences is definitely a mistake
