If there is no difference between an A+ and an A, why is there a difference between a B+ and a B? Or an A and an A-?

Shouldn’t an A+ be the highest? What is the point of getting an A+ if you don’t get any notice for it?

There is a difference between an A and an A+ for grad students.

And for Ross students…

But no idea why it is like that for LSA students.

Does Michigan’s Med School give different GPAs for A’s and A+'s ?

Michigan does not like to inflate grades, thus an A+ is mostly just for bragging rights (they’re already very hard to get).

Here’s how grades are computed:

GRADUATE SCHOOLS
Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies (A+ through B = pass)
School of Public Health (A+ through B = pass)
College of Engineering (A+ through B = pass)
School of Social Work (A+ through C- = pass)
School of Music, Theatre & Dance (A+ through C = pass)
School of Admistration (A+ through B = pass)
(Prior to Fall 1990 A+ through B- = pass)
School of Natural Resoures & Environment (A+ through B = pass)
A+ = 9, A = 8, A- = 7, B+ = 6, B = 5, B- = 4, C+ = 3, C = 2, C- = 1, D = 0, E = 0

UNDERGRADUATE SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES
School of Art and Design
School of Dentistry (Dental Hygiene)
School of Education
College of Engineering
School of Music, Theatre & Dance
School of Natural Resources & Environment
School of Nursing
School of Public Policy
College of Literature, Science, and the Arts
Division of Kinesiology
A+ = 4.0, A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, DC- = 1.7*, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, E = 0.0

School of Business Administration Undergraduate
A+ = 4.4, A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.4, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.4, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.4, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, E = 0.0

College of Architecture and Urban Planning-Graduate and Undergraduate
College of Pharmacy-Graduate and Undergraduate
A+ = 4.0*, A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, E = 0.0
* The grade A+ applies to College of Pharmacy only.

So essentially…for undergrads…the only school that inflates grades is Ross?

Yup.

Michigan really needs to unify the way A+'s are considered. Professors are all over the board in whether or not they give A+'s (and what merits an A+), largely because there are no guidelines. Not that GPA matters that much for them, but it’s a little disconcerting for graduate students knowing that their GPA can drop no matter how well they do in a class, simply because the professor doesn’t give out A+'s.

I doubt anyone would hold it against you in grad school if you have an 8.0 instead of a 9.0 graduate GPA.
