Why is Donald Trump a thing?

@DrGoogle So I’ve been told. I’m leaving my options open as far as that’s concerned. If I were to enter that arena I’d pursue something to a liking of my dear hero William Kristol and teach rather than run for public office. Thank you, however, for noticing.

Come on, people. How many times do we have to say to stay away from political positions, commentary, etc.

We need Rufus T Firefly and all sing “Hail, Hail Fredonia” , now there is a politician we can love.

Thanks to Trump, late night comedians now have some good material for months to come!

Rufus T Firefly…Duck Soup…one of the best movies ever made.

Without making any particular political point, I think the reason a Trump or anyone like him can actually seem to be a credible candidate is because the nature of politics has changed. How many people actually read a candidate’s positions on things? How many people read party platforms? Modern politics, much more than the old days, is based on sound bites and perceptions, that are shaped by the media and by the various partisan groups shaping the message. So instead of having a discussion about Obama’s positions in the 2008 elections, we have sound bites trying to portray him as a foreigner or as some sort of Black Panther Party member, when McCain ran instead of running his campaign based around who McCain was, they came up with a package to appeal to things he himself didn’t believe in, the whole Sarah Palin roadshow, when Kerry was running instead of talking about his political record, we had the swift boat sound bites, that basically has nothing to do with his positions or any real relevance to the campaign (it basically was a counter move to the questions about GW Bush’s military record or lack thereof, depending on how you looked at it).

I would love to see a campaign that is based on real issues, with real facts and real ideas, but I am not holding my breath, it will be another campaign of sound bites and blog posts and factoids and the like.

I have great respect for Trump because of his honesty. Even though I’d never vote for him, I think it’s quite admirable of him as a politician. Then again, if he wasn’t as wealthy as he is to fund his own campaign, he may not be so truthful.

He could try the Hillary technique of press handling…

He might be “honest” about how he feels, but his habitual relationship with facts is not one I would use that word to describe.

I was reading about Trump’s speech in Las Vegas. I think Trump can do well. He is striking a chord.

Even if Trump isn’t a realistic candidate, he still has the power to influence discussion of the issues-- and he already has.

There are publications and TV shows that examine candidates’ positions in detail and that offer opinions on their various positions. Think of Washington Week in Review on PBS, Wall St Journal, The Economist. And there are publications and TV shows that only offer sound bites and that focus on things like candidates’ clothes and hair styles. Think of your local TV news and USA Today.

If you want in-depth information and analysis, you can find it. You might have to go a bit out of your way to get it, but it exists.

He is more of a clown than the Rent Is Too Damn High guy. One can only hope he gets the nod.

But if I’m not mistaken, Jimmy McMillan (The Rent is Too Damn High guy) got to actually participate in a debate. Or am I just watching too much SNL?

He participated. It was comic gold.

I view Trump as extremely effective in sales.

I think he is effective because he will say whatever he believes he needs to to generate a sale.

He is probably great politician material.

Ugh…so depressing.

Well, should anyone want to bet on the odds of a candidate winning, here ya go https://m.oddschecker.com/t/politics/us-politics/us-presidential-election-2016/winner

This one has him at 50/1. I like Eva Longoria at 750/1 http://www.paddypower.com/bet/politics/other-politics/us-politics?ev_oc_grp_ids=791149

Who would possibly buy a bet for Kim Kardashian being President? Heavily considering placing the bets for Donald Trump because the spread looks fabulous if he actually wins.

Haha, Kim Kardashian is 1000 to 1.
