UC Berkeley is listed in the top ten of every department it has. It is also more prestigious than Emory. Then why does Emory outrank UC Berkeley? Why isnt UC Berkeley in the top ten?

Because it’s a public school.

^ Emory is a joke

What lists are you looking at? Where does it show Berkeley department rank?

USNWR rankings are terrible. Emory is nowhere near the caliber or UC Berkeley.

Because US News favors privates. Berkeley was actually a top 15 at one point until the formula got changed sometime in the 90’s.

USNWR places a lot of weight on two categories a public will never excel in:

class size
alumni giving

because emory is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy overrated.

USNWR college rankings are also way overrated.

Because of the private school bias and the fact that USNWR has little credibility

Does it really matter? -_-

Personally, I believe there is something wrong with the USNews methodology. The assigning of weights is questionable, for me. Some less important measures were given too much importance whilst the supposedly important ones were somehow neglected.

Berkeley doesn’t play the system as much as some private schools do.

Berkeley/UCLA/Michigan don’t superscore SATs. The privates do.

Berkeley doesn’t weigh SATs on its admissions as much as it does GPA. But USNews weigh SATs more than it does GPA. (That contradicts USNews’ already.) And Berkeley has a “holistic” admissions system, wherein other factors not reflected on the applicant’s stats are looked into and are assigned with certain values. [YouTube - UC Berkeley Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjGI2e4GG9E)

Yes, Berkeley undergrad isn’t as strong as its postgrad, in general, but I don’t think the difference (that USNews has suggested) should be that wide that it’s now ranked outside of the top 20.

But the most glaring lapse of USNews, in my opinion, is the absence of measure for facilities.

At Berkeley, the facilities are vast and state-of-the art. Many of these facilities that you will find on campus can only be found there. (THE WORLD envies Berkeley for housing some milti-million dollar facilities yet these aren’t measured!!!)

If you’re the “special type” of student that would create breakthroughs… you can be housed at Berkeley (UCLA, Michigan, Texas and UIUC) and thrive and be able to perform your inventions and great ideas. The small privates, on the other hand, can’t do as much for this kind of students because they lack facilities and their resources arent’ enough to fund such programs.

If USNews’ would adjust its methodology, Berkeley would rank in the top 15, for undergrad.

But it doesn’t matter. Many people out there truly believe that Berkeley is a great school. In fact, some surveys have shown that Berkeley is a solid top 10 in the nation. The academicians and scholars believe Berkeley is a solid top 6 in the nation (Check the PA of Berkeley.) And according to a survey conducted by GALLUP NEWS SERVICE, Berkeley is top 6 in the nation by the highly educated people.

Here’s the except on that:
*What about post-graduates themselves, who might be expected to know better than others what schools are prestigious, given that they applied to schools at least twice (for undergraduate and graduate work) and most likely spent a good deal of time evaluating schools? Here’s the list of schools most often mentioned by college graduates with at least some post-graduate education:

Harvard 29%
Stanford 27
Yale 14
MIT 11
Berkeley 7
Princeton
Michigan

Though I agree that Berkeley is a better school academically than Emory, I would have to say it’s ridiculous to read people posting “Emory is a joke,” because it clearly is not. It is a very good school with very rigorous academics that doesn’t grade inflate like the ivies and has a very strong student body with great financial aid and a nice endowment.

Oh, certainly, Emory is far from being a joke. It’s definitely one of the best in the US. Just not better than Berkeley.

Emory > Berkeley

Emory has more highly intelligent students. Compare freshmen and women’s average SATscores between two schools.

What is Brokelely’s average ACT?

^LOL yes i love the madness. I love Emory!!! YAY

Brokelely doesn’t believe in ACT. Kind of the same way it doesn’t believe in creating a separate “but equal” college to house all the bozos. =).
