<p>It has to do with the very bloody 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan (where millions of people were killed, one of the great tragedies of the 20th century). The leaders of the INC and Muslim League set a hurried timetable for independence from Britain on August 15th, and when they decided to divide up the land between Muslims/Hindus they were in a rush to beat the deadline and never really adequately defined how they were going to partition Kashmir, among other territories. That is partly why there is so much violence today.</p>
