<p>called UCSD if it’s not located in San Diego? Shouldn’t it be called UC-LJ?</p>

<p>Perhaps at the time the University was founded, La Jolla was considered to be a part of San Diego.</p>

<p>Because it is a major employer and research facility in the greater San Diego area and has a major impact on San Diego in many ways. Boston College isn’t in Boston, University of Dallas isn’t in Dallas, Austin College isn’t in Austin…the list goes on. Also allows for more name recognition…no one has heard of La Jolla.</p>

<p>UCSD is called UCSD because it is in San Diego. La Jolla is a neighborhood that is located within the San Diego city limits:</p>

<p>It’s not called UC-La Jolla for the same reason that UCLA isn’t called UC-Westwood.</p>

<p>No Newport Beach and Irvine are two seperate towns where as La Jolla and Westwood are just areas within San Diego and LA.</p>

<p>When UC Irvine was originally built, it was in Newport Beach but the city limits was skewed so it could be situated in Irvine. </p>

<p>It’s joked it might as well be called UC “Newport Beach” because of the close proximity and the prior history.</p>

<p>Westwood is not a city. it is a neighborhood within the city of Los Angeles. UCLA’s city in its mailing address is “Los Angeles, CA.”</p>

<p>UCI is located in the city of Irvine.</p>

<p>I’m pretty sure UCSD’s address is La Jolla, CA, at least according to the Yale Daily News.</p>

<p>I live in Poway, CA which is part of San Diego County. Its within the greater city limits as others have said.</p>

<p>In la jolla, i believe you can adress your your mail la jolla, ca… or u can address it san diego, ca… both will work since you are in both la jolla and the city of san diego. At ucsd you can title your adress san diego, ca and other times adress it la jolla, ca… both ways will work.</p>

<p>The acronym “UCSD” has more aesthetic appeal than the acronym “UCLJ”. :rolleyes:</p>
