Why is UF so popular?

I’ve compared the coursework for EE at UF , FSU , and FIU and they are about the same. What determines why people say UF is so much better than compared to a school like FIU? I’m not talking about SAT / ACT scores which don’t seem to model college success as nearly as much as it should.

The way I see is a Signals and Systems course is still a Signals and Systems course regardless of where you take it. the ABET accreditation standardizes the curriculum for something like engineering so why would someone say a degree from UF is worth more when the coursework is very close. It’s not like an elitist university like MIT where our calc 1 and 2 is just one class there and doesn’t everyone at MIT have to do elementary calculus regardless of their major ( calc 1-3 here). And even then there is only so much you can change within a major.

The aptitude of the average UF student is higher than the average FIU student (though there’s overlap for sure). This means that since most classes are curved that a class at UF will be harder to get an A in than one at FIU, and further the tests at UF are probably a bit harder though the coursework may be similar.

You’re right that an ABET accredited program is an ABET accredited program. However, more national companies will recruit at a place like UF because of its reputation compared to a place like FIU because they can get the most bang for their buck by choosing to recruit at programs that are a) large and b) are known to turn out a high percentage of competent students.

For me it’s just that UF is the cheapest school (because it’s public) with the highest prestige in the state of Florida. You’re right, anywhere you go the coursework will be pretty much the same. However, no public university in Florida is known as well as UF nationwide.

Each minor difference between the schools play on themselves and compound into the disparity that leads to the reason you posted in the first place.
