Why major in accounting?

Lots of people major in Accountancy when you dont even need it to qualify for a CPA exam. Comments?

The same could be said for passing the bar exam, which most law schools prepare law students for, but is not required to take the exam. In fact, getting certified for a lot of professions do not require formal education, hence why many self-learners or capable people just study on their own and do not go to school to get certified. Of course, most people do, because of the convenience of a program that (for the most part) directly leads them for preparation they otherwise would not have done without that guidance.

Essentially, what you’re asking is, “Why do we even have school?”. Some go and some don’t to be successful in an area of expertise. Others are great self-learners, while others need the assistance from someone else or perhaps want an easier time to learn something with an instructor at hand specific for their major - in this case, accounting.
