I’ve heard mixed responses on this before, but for deferred applicants…is it considered too much of a brown-nosing move, or if done the right way a major plus for consideration in the RA pool?

Hm…I kinda like to know this too.

hey comon… if u send in a letter saying u really want to get in and that it is indeed ur first choice for countless reasons… my brain thinks that your application letter would move to somewhere in the top of the pile… ie chances are higher. Its just that its better to do something that u feel is right rather than regret later for not having done it .

i think that it would be a lot more effective to get someone else to write on your behalf-perhaps another teacher, etc., who could indicate in their letter that MIT is your first choice and how it’s like your dream to go there and stuff-all the “why MIT” business from your end should have gone into your essays especially the “which department” question and the long essay.

that could actually work. As usual we have some more ingenious and insightful tips from niceilike. Nice did u submit a teacher rec like that?

Well I already had a teacher write a supplementary rec for me…so if not a why MIT letter then would it be better to go ahead and submit an abstract or just let the one rec be the end of sending materials?
