ECs (not a lot actually, but I spend a lot of time with these):
Boy Scouts (I should have Eagle before Nov1)
Band (I marched last summer in the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps, basically professional marching band, May 19th-Aug13th, big deal)
Quiz Bowl
Science Research (on the Direct Methanol Fuel Cell, assorted state awards)
JV Soccer sophomore year (quite fun)

I have leadership and such awards from band and scouts.
I play trombone/baritone (usually 1st chair, smattering of honor bands and state festival awards)

Letters of recommendation:
They’ll probably be about a 4 on a 1-5 scale.
I need to decide if I should submit a third from my band director, who I’ve worked with a lot and who has got to know me more as a person (and would give me a great rec)

Anything else?

I’ll be writing my essay about drum corps, I did some things in the audition process that showed perseverance, that should turn out well.

I’ll list myself as a physics & philosophy major

bump-buh-bump

no one?

I say you have a good chance- Great test scores, Great GPA, Pretty good EC’s. I think it will come down to luck (sadly) and how good your recomendations and essays are.

Just like the previous post says you have the scores, grades and EC’s its gonna come down to that “other” stuff. You seem to be intrested in Research why not apply to somewhere like MIT?

I was originally a gung-ho math nerd who wanted nothing more than MIT.

Its a very nice school, I really like its architecture, and I’ll consider it if Yale doesn’t work out.

I’d probably have to be a uber-physics guy, though.
I want to continue to experiment.

You may have noticed that i was interested in PHILOSOPHY. :)

“I really like its architecture”…why don’t you say THAT on the app. Maybe that’s the “other stuff” they’re looking for.

Who says uber?
Why don’t you just apply to IUSB and save yourself some grief?
At least there you can hide your drug habit more easily.

Yeah, here are my real ECs

Voluenteering with Focus on the Family (20 hours per week)
Cocaine production (10 hours per week)
Assorted other immoral behavior (10 hours per week)

I love this website

Also, ->I<- say uber

I do have an actual serious question.
Does Yale really not want additional letters of reccomendation?
I have a teacher (band director) that i would like to ask, and he could tell some personal stories since band is about half of what i spend time on, but i didnt cure cancer or anything under his supervision.

ALSO, how good do you think you have to be at an instrument to submit a tape/cd? State soloist, 1st chair all-state band, child progedy?
Ideas?

One supplemental rec by someone who can show you in a different context than your academic recs is fine. If you’re a state soloist or 1st chair all-state band, you’ll undoubtedly put this fact in your application and it speaks for itself. I have typically advised not sending in a CD unless you would be competitive for a conservatory.
