I came from a small countryside. In my countryside all my neighbors are friendly. Now, I moved to a big city. I found the people in big city are more indifferent than country people. for example, my neighbors never talk to me even I say hi to them. They just went away ignoring me. They did that because they are busy or just afraid to talk with people? Or, because their neighbors always different they don’t want waste time to show their friendly to their neighbor.

Neighbors don’t mean friends.

Also, there is a lot more crime in cities, so you gotta be wary about who you just go up to and strike a conversation with. With people today, you never know what someone may be packing.

Life in cities is also more fast-paced. Many times people don’t really have time to stop and be friendly. Also, cities give everyone kind of an anonymity that a lot of people really enjoy. It’s just not really part of the culture of big cities, there are too many people to be friendly with everyone you see.

I find that being nice to people, as a general rule, takes a lot of time and energy. You have to go out of your way to engage in conversation, be sociable, etc. This is easier to do in places where it’s relatively slower-paced and less populated.

In cities, the pace is much faster, and people are everywhere – not to mention the fact that there are also lots of dangerous/crazy people wandering the streets from time to time. With a busier, faster life, it’s just not really conducive to taking time to stop and chat it up with everyone you meet. Most people just go on full ignore and go about their business. Otherwise it just takes too much energy to talk to everyone you meet – it’s just not as feasible.

agreed with roxsox

Indifference in big cities does not always apply to big college campuses. College students are fairly sociable. You can get chummy with them and not worry about your car/bike/dog being stolen, unlike that in big cities.

Well, you need to know street smarts. So you arent suposed to look at anyone. Its kind of wierd, especially in the city of brotherly love, but its true. My mom always gets nervous when my friends and i go to the city on the train, like to south street. She always reminds me not to look at people and not to point at them. Theres people that just walk up to you and they are crazy and they start talking to you and asking you for all kinds of wierd stuff. They want money usually. There was this guy in philly who went around on the main streets in philly and cleaned your car when you parked. They he would tell you that you owed him money even though you didnt ask him to clean it. I saw him arguing with this guy and i thought they were going to fight. So if you look at people you might get shot in some places. Some sections are really bad.

i think it’s like a common thing in NYC that neighbors dont know each other. people in big cities are usually busier, and dont have extra time or incentives to meet new people such as neighbors. they have their own focuses and networks. You only konw your doorman cuz you need to tip them each year on the chrismas eve lol.
