Humans care about our standing within our own tribes, and very little about what external tribes think. So it’s not surprising that people of socioeconomic class A don’t care that much about the opinions or judgments coming from socioeconomic class B. It’s usually mutual. The students I met at Southeastern Oklahoma State University have never given a moment’s thought to whether lawyers in New Jersey are impressed by their school, and those lawyers in New Jersey have never given a thought to whether the SEOSU students agree with their decision to pay $70,000 a year for Williams College.
