Why self study 5 tests...

I don’t get it, what is the point of studying Human Geography and Environmental Science. YOu won’t learn too much, they aren’t really requirements, and as for AP credit, there is (GASP) a limit to the amount you can get.

Can someone explain to me the value of this?

It sure isn’t love of learning…

Bragging rights.
And apparently it shows diligence and devotion or something, and proves you can be successful in a college class…

lol i think that would suck. e-sci? that’s almost as pathetic as a japanese lit AP… it wouldnt get you anywhere. unless you plan to move to japan and analyze lit, it does nothing.

I personally think that the Latin Lit APs are kind of stupid. What’s the point?? Latin isn’t spoken anymore anywhere, so what will reading the lit help you with?? At least with a Japanese lit class, you would be able to move to Japan and to study, but with Latin, you can’t move anywhere!

How do you know it isn’t love of learning?

envio sci raises my gpa as it is on a 5 pt scale. :)

Well, it’d be easy to take the Envi Sci AP after having taken AP Bio. (I’m taking Bio independently, so I figured I might as well take E Sci.) There are a few tests that are easier to study for independently than others, and a few tests (such as the above) that are interrelated, so studying for 5+ APs independently isn’t necessarily as stressful as one might imagine.

I second Eightfold Way.

Why do you think AP Human Geography and AP Environmental Science are useless? I don’t think other AP’s are any different from them.

It’s probably because they are some of the easiest APs. Most people don’t really think that they learn a lot in an easy class. I consider myself to be one of these people. My math and science teachers (Canada has an entirely different system from the American one. We have one science class, and one math class they both teach us what is appropriate to our grade level from every domain. So, a Science class has a bio part, a chem part, a physics part as well as an Enviromental sci part. The classes are like this until the 11th grade for science, when we get to choose what scientific strands we wish to pursue, and 12th grade for math when we get to choose what mathematic strand we wish to pursue) are extremely tough, and all of their tests tend to be extremely nit-picky. Even if it is totally crazy to have 65-95 math questions of homework per night, I feel like I’m learning everything I should be. I probably wouldn’t feel the same if I only had 4 math problems per night.

To sum it all up, people tend to think that an easy class is a useless class, although it isn’t always so.

you have plenty to learn buddy

Well, I can understand doing latin, as it will improve your vocabulary, probably enable you to become a priest, etc…It also serves as a fun challenge to occupy your time.

But the two I mentioned are taken mostly by kids who simply want to stack up 5s for their college app…

The question is why should I (and admissions officers) see any value in it.

If you take AP Env Science, and you are a eagle scout and president of the earth club maybe…But otherwise your (rather shallow), intentions are clear.

Raising a GPA is fine…but self-studying will not get you HS credit or raise your GPA. So why do it?

8fold way, your post is my point. The tests are easy to study, so people take them. But why??

E Sci for Siemens perhaps?
